I contacted VP and gave them the engine type and serial number. They sent me some certificates, this being an RCD one. Is this what you meant??

Re certificate
Somewhere it will say the engine no from which compliance to the requirement started from.
Had this problem a few years ago trying to get a used boat onto Lake Constance unfortunately it was prior to the engine tested.

Boats which were already in the UK before the cut-off date (end of last year) aren't being imported. They conformed to the RCD specifications at the time they were imported or were put on the market/sold new in the UK. As they are not being imported they do not need to conform to any new fangled regulations.

If you import a boat into the UK, from the EU or anywhere else, then it needs to conform to the current UK regulations which are a currently a copy and paste of Recreational Craft Directive 2013/53/EU.

As a UK resident, if you bring a boat to the UK, you are by definition importing it, unless you were the owner at the time it was exported from the UK, and you are bringing it back under the return of goods relief scheme . (which does not apply to your case).

So, is it possible to get the engine certified so that it holds the relevant RCD?

No. It is an old engine and does not meet the latest EU specs. The RCD is just a Directive for boats in total. Engines need to meet the current EU spec which is almost certainly what will be required.

As I said earlier, rather than trying to get to grips with it yourself, take professional advice from a certifying body like CE proof as to what needs to be done to the boat to get UK certification.

This is all new stuff following Brexit and I guess there are probably some unresolved issues simply because so few re-certifications have taken place.

So I have been through the RYA for advice. And what they said is that as long as the craft has a relevant CE stamp and certified for the relevant RCD at the time of manufacture then it can be imported back to the U.K.. The cut off time is December 31st 2022.

navigate her across the chanel, in to the solent, right in to her new berth, and you're ready,
no worry's with paperwork nor VAT ...
