buying from Channel Islands?

OK, but who is interested in these forms? I have no concerns if you want to fill them in, but I dont think many bother.
I assume the recent haul on some sailing boat of a few £mio of drugs wasnt down to a missing Q flag...

I accept that not many bother with the forms and I accept that many dodge through France in order to avoid the complication.

What happens if you are on of the unlucky ones who gets pulled over on the way back from CI.

You dont have a form showing you only left england 10 days ago, they have a record of someone filing a form 5 years ago on a boat that fits your description so assume you have been away for 5 years and they want 20% of your value .

But dont worry I am sure jfm will get your money back .......................one day

and when I say jfm will get your money back I actually mean that, in that 20% of your boat value will just about cover his fees :D

Download this form, fill it in missing out date of departure, photocopy it several times, address an envelope so all you have to do id date it, sign it and post it.
phone 0845 7231110 on return, takes a few minutes , no hassle.

thanks for all the input this is most interesting!

i have visited numerous french and belgium ports over the years and i have never filled in any forms whatsoever.
the HM at the port i am visiting merely wants the marina fees as fast as possible.
i have been in cherbourg twice in the last two months and no official paperwork was completed. Only the marina paperwork.
truthfully, how many on this forum fill in these forms and raise the q flag?

Yes but you qare talking about EU-EU trips, where no forms are needed. C1331 is only used if you leave EU

I used C1331 when I took boat to Jersey, when I was UK based. It's no effort

RE VAT is due after exportation or 3 years away but the HMR&C may decide to let you off if its your own boat you have been on an extended holiday .

They don't have the discretion or freedom to be so capricious Daka. The conditions for waiver of the 3 year rule are formally written down (sorry I can't link to it; don't have time today to find it) and don't include extended holiday. The local HMRC bods have to follow this, not decide for themselves

Um, I have never charged anyone on this forum :D

I am aware you frequently offer/provide valuable free help and nearly added a bit to that effect but I didnt want you to be inundated with 'newbies' from around the world seeking free help , you know I was only really teasing anyway ;)

That would be quite an assumption, I think.

For those still interested the rules on Returned Goods Relief (RGR) covering both duty and VAT are in HMRC Notice 236. Includes section on acceptable reasons for extensions of 3 years (including some delightful phrases indicating discretion!)

Happy bed time reading - if you have the patience

daka

we were all 'newbies' at one time or another.
if jfm wants to give 'free' advice then surely that is his business,it has nothing to do with you.

i joined this forum because i am interested in boats.
if i can help anyone i will.
free of charge i might add.

i seek no 'free' advice, merely opinions

your little 'teasing' message never came across that way.

I think one of us has the wrong end of the stick .

The 'newbies' asking for free advice I had in mind was actually Basque freedom fighters, Thai drug smugglers etc

I didnt mean to interfere with any free advice jfm or anyone was offering you or any ONE. ;)

The teasing I referred to was towards jfm in that his fees were high, I hope he took it in the light hearted nature it was intended, in all honesty he may actually be cheap to employ, I have no idea if his charges are high or otherwise, I assume he offers good value though (especially towards forum members , myself included as one who has received excellent free advice).

As to you being a newbie, I actually assumed you were a long standing forum member who had a boat in the CI who realized they had fallen foul of VAT laws and were attempting to find a way out without tipping HMR&C off.

Now if you really are a newbie to the forum will you please explain how you know which forum members are the lads in the know and which ones are convicts just passing the day away in the library :D

daka

yes i really am a newbie.
i have no idea who 'a' is from 'b' .
i accept it is possible that i got the wrong end of the stick.

however, i do have an interest in this thread for i am thinking of locating my boat in jersey.

best regards

Thats all fine and dandy but earlier you did infer you were willing to help others freely , will you please therefore make good on your offer and work out a way to spot the ringers :D

(just joking, welcome to the forum):)
