Where is the best place, for those of us who don't have chart plotters, to buy paper charts ? Do you prefer the Admiralty or commercial Imray etc. ?

I prefer Imray, though I'm not anti-Admiralty. I generally buy direct from imray.com to make sure I'm getting the current edition (some suppliers can be a bit naughty about selling old ones if they have stock to dispose of) but if I need them in a hurry I'll check online what the current edition is and then pop into Force 4 as it's nearby.

I think Stanfords et al have folded, so it's a two-horse race in the UK. Elsewhere, local charts may make sense (reputedly SHOM is more detailed around the crinkly bits of the French coast) but I have no experience there beyond programming a load of Danish charts into a Yeoman plotter ten years ago :)

I use www.chartroom-online.com. You get a choice of most admiralty charts new, second hand but corrected to date, second hand but not up to date or cancelled. Their second hand prices are very reasonable. Cancelled ones are only a couple of quid. Orders normally arrive in a day or two. No connection, save as a happy customer.
