really just out of idle curiosity, where are the cheap US/Caribbean boats advertised for sale? Is it just on Yachtworld or are there other more specific sites.

This is just boredom and curiosity. I’m not going to buy one. I’m in a different market

As suggested you need to get into local advertising listings and ebay as most older boats don't get into the international listings. There are numerous youtubes that will give you a flavour. simple google like this

I’m thinking of buying an American yacht in the US and then cruising her around the Caribbean for a few years. Has anyone done something similar? Are there any legal/taxation/insurance issues that I need to be aware of?

Interesting reading (and has some fundamental errors!) but totally irrelevant to the OP as it is about operating boats commercially.as charter vessels where some registers have advantages over others depending on the nature of the boat and the way it is operated.
