Considering buying a Phantom 38, any advice / things to look out for from previous 38 / 40 owners ??

Or any owners on here looking to sell?

Thanks

Ajay

Phantom 38

Good choice, we owned a P38 for about 5 years and took her all along the South cost of the UK (Falmouth to Dover) and the continent (Brittany to Holland)

Things to look for (or more probably things that went wrong with ours) Assume you will end up with a Volvo powered one.

Weld on the exhaust, had one fail in mid channel, lots of hot salty water over the engine room.

State of the impellors - the starbord side one is really really difficult to get to unless you are 4 ft tall and a size zero - so they tend not to get changed.

Water Pumps We had a problem with the gearing (applicable to TAMD38P Volvos rather than Phantom 38s)

The waxed cloth which goes around the shaft is a swine to remove, built a special tool for that job

The paint on the flybridge dashboard bubbled up.

Apart from that a great boat, our circumstances changed and we decided to go with a sports boat (Sealine SC38) been out in Force 8 in both and felt very safe.

Popular boat so easy to sell, I expected a 6 month sales process but those guys from Ancasta had it on a truck within about 3 weeks which meant we were boatless for months!

Best of luck in finding your boat

Good boat but price is very important - obviously I guess! One I know for for sale - looks fine hardly used afaik at Kip Marina. Been actively on sale via Kip brokers for about 3 years! At least 3 years in fact. So they don't all sell easily. Just my two pence worth.

Looks like a price from 3 years ago, hardly competitive in today's climate...probably still there in another 3 years!

Thanks for the replies,

Wow, that guy really doesnt want to sell ;) 189 is more than they were new ;)

Main problem these months is availability, theres nothing out there !! :(

From little experience, all Scottish boats seem, expensive and poorly looked after.

I can only refer to looking for MF. 500 miles round Scotland, all we saw was junk. Ripped seats and covers.

Finding MF in Dartmouth was a bit of a fluke, but still found she needed two new gear boxes, shortly after.

Main thing is finding a good hull, to tack all the **** onto
So.

A Phantom is a good boat. It's the bits added to it that will be the problem. It will also be an endless repair of bits and bobs. As is MF.

Buying a new boat does not seem to remove the problems, as there will be faults in the new bits. Strangely bits 20 years old work perfect. New ones cause more problems.

So it dont matter if you have old or new, there will always be new bits that dont work. Also old bits that do.

So the main thing is, the boat has some redundancy, of spare parts. You can go to options 1 2 or 3. Or maybe 4..

We have a 2007 Phantom 40, great boat however it's about to go on the Market as we're considdering a move from flybridge to a sports boat.
PM me if you like any more info on the model or details of our boat.

A sportsboat will better suit our current boating requirements and be quicker to get ready and wash off/pack away at the end of the day.
