Looking to buy a good quality all-round torch for the boat.

Have see something like this
truelite_21_led.gif
at £19.99

Or should I go for Maglites or what?

Donald

Looks like LEDs which should be good on power consumption and I have a hand held lamp with LEDs and the brightness is impressive. Is it water or shower proof?

Having seen a wind-up torch that my daughter has (Robert Dyas £5 at Christmas) I am very tempted to buy one for the boat. There are no batteries to run down and the led light is perfectly good for emergency use. Leds have this strange characteristic of being very bright when shone towards you but not as bright when you shine away. This could be very useful to attract emergency services at sea assuming you can keep it dry.

we have got one of those shake and charge torches and a wind up one, both leds, and no worries about flat batteries...

Don't get them at a swindlery, i got mine at a garage for a £5 each...(or 19.95 to 29.95 from swindlery)....

A head torch from petzl are also very good, very economic on the aaa batts, and look 'no hands'....

We do quite a bit of night sailing and I find ALL the torches we have too bright. Once you have got your eyes in you don't need a bright narrow beam (unless you really are searching when you use 2million candles or whatever). I have a LED head light with three settings, too bright, much too bright, and, well you get my drift...

If they are any good then buy two and stick one in the grab-bag. Another wind-up item for the grab-bag is the multi-charger for mobile phones; costs pennies and it might just be a life-saver in a difficult situation.

I will second that, use them at home and have 3 on the boat, they are superb, hold charge if unused for months, and a hectic wind keeps them going full pelt!

No longer have to panic when the little ones take the torches to play, and not only cheap to run, but really eco (which is not my first concern, but no doubt will help with my carbon footprinttho just to p*** off the lot of them I will now be cremated)

I bought a shake-to-charge Led torch in our local cheapo chinese emporium for 1.5 euros.
I then saw the same article in a UK chandlers catalogue, (branches in Poole and Bristol), at 16.95 of your English Pounds.
I would gladly pay that for a torch with a proper switch, instead of two bits of brass rubbing together, which could not be activated accidentally, and leds instead of filaments.
But at fifteen times mark-up , it would probanly cost 169.50.

I bought just the same torch on ebay......paid a penny for it, brand new including batteries and holster, it came from Hong Kong and is brand new issue to the Royal Hong Kong police...I paid £4.99 fedex delivery and came within 3 days from China...............brilliant, how do they do it???

Paul.

OK. How do they do it?

I've never bought anything off of ebay before, so this makes me naturally suspicious!

I often ask that my self...have bought loads of stuff from Hong Kong and to this date never had a problem

Bought a Brand new GPS mouse for £9.99 plus £10.99 fedex delivery, arrived in 2 days and pure quality...you would pay £100 plus for the same in this country.

Those are great - we had the unfortunate company of the police last night after we got back from the boat and some little [ word removed] had broken into SWMBO's car - the police turned up at 10pm (pitch black) and his LED torch (like the one in your link) was very impressive.

I've had a standard Lantern battery cheapo Chinese copy torch on board for years .... only changed 6v battery couple of times ... never changed the bulb. Sits in locker ... still works today ... cost me less than a fiver.

I have a "Car accessory" cigarette lighter plug in halogen bulb jobbie ... has 3m cable .... that's 2 yr old ... cost 4.99 - still in full working order ... sits on boat.

For house - general use ... even goes on boat as well ... my Beam-Gun ... rechargeable from car or mains ... has stand built in that clicks to angle you want .... opposite side is handle the swivels to vertical or horizontal ... the beam on it is amazing ... shine into night sky and see the beam like a searchlight ! Cost 6 quid in local s/market ...

I did have waterproof and also EX class torches before from days on tankers ... to be honest - had no more life out of them than the cheapos above ... and they cost a bomb !!

Over here starting to get LED versions of the cheapos ..... will have to give em a try !
