Hard to find advice on this, so I'm trying to find out more about buying a yacht in Spain. I'm a UK citizen with Spanish residency (living here permanently), and UK RYA qualifications and ICC. Can anyone tell me if I need Spanish qualifications/licence as well to sail a Spanish registered boat I purchase? Thanks.

The unfortunate reality will be who will ask you will make decision. I got a document from a main port Capitan. This was basically a Spanish translation certifying that my ICC and RYA DS was equivalent to a Spanish Capitan de Yacht, including the size for sailing boat + engine power. Eases the process with authority, always a good idea in Spain.

I believe I read the French invented red tape and the Spanish perfected it - i had always thought so far as at least canaries were concerned uk qualifications sufficed with ICC . I don’t see how you will have a problem insuring via a local yacht broker on basis risk is located in Spain. All the main insurers have offices there.

Perhaps things changed post Bxt, but IIRC it used to be that as a UK citizen you could keep your boat on British reg, and use British quals, although if you were a Spanish resident yiu had to pay the matriculation tax. If you registered the boat on Spanish reg, you used to need Spansh quals.
