From the 1st March this year, vessels under 200 tons that are Danish flagged no longer appear on the Danish Shipping register. Dunno if thats just for boats flagged since that date but Ive just delivered a recently flagged Danish boat and was cause for grief in both Spain and Portugal. Worth further investigation I reckon. :encouragement:

Many boats aren't, and never were. As long as you have the EU VAT proof there should be no issues.
As an owner You're actually responsible for removal of said vessel from the register when sold to a foreign nation. It is not like the SSR.

The boat I delivered was formerly on the German Shipping register and purchased by a Danish owner. The lack of a registration document is unusual and gave cause for concern and delay when entering Spanish and Portugese marinas. The French, however, didnt seem to care!

Interesting - It shouldn't be a problem, but there seems to be confusion around this in some countries. The recommendation from DOCA (Danish Ocean Cruising Association) is basically to make sure that you have some sort of proof of ownership (which could be the maritime register, but does not have to be) + VAT paid. A few sailors have struggled with the VAT side of it in Holland lately.

Danish boats seldom have proper arrangements for anchoring, and sometimes none at all. Otherwise, they make some desirable craft,

X Yachts have decent anchoring kit - apparently also sail pretty well
Indeed, along with others intended for export, but many Danish yachts used in local waters will have little use for anchoring and I have seen some with no anchor roller at all.

.... and in Croatia and Slovenia. VAT is a minefield despite what we were assured.

Warning, think you are VAT paid in the EU? ... Think again - both Slovenien and Croatian port authorities refuse to recognise VAT paid status of boat.

As the OP in 2018 we did complete our purchase in Denmark and it was straightforward, at the the time a full purchase survey with report in English was approx £250 which was less than the equivalent done in the UK . As a point of note lots of Danish Boats (Including ours) had there original sale completed in Germany as the VAT rate there was lower than Denmark this was common practice, one advantage of this is that the VAT was paid direct to the German authorities and they issued a formal Government Reciept of tax paid including a Government stamp so proof of EU VAT is very straight forward

If you are a UK resident and the boat will be purchased outside the UK (Denmark) then be aware of the following.

If a boat changes hands outside the UK after 01.01.2021 and is subsequently brought back to the UK it will have no right to RGR and will be treated as a UK import - even if it is EU goods with EU VAT paid. No different to buying a boat in Turkey or USA and bringing it back to the UK.

All the consessions for Brexit rely on the boat being your property before 01.01.2021 .... when the EU VAT rules were still in place and the UK was still effectively using EU rules during the transition period. The consessions allow existing owners to return their boats to the UK and use RGR to retain VAT paid status from the EU.

If you buy an EU boat after the transtion period (after 01.01.2021) it is effectively a new UK import and will be treated as such. The solution is to buy a non-VAT paid boat in the EU and pay VAT and import duty when it enters the UK.

This is my understanding of the current situation but definately seek professional advice from HM Customs before buying the boat.
