I have searched the forums and it seems that re bedding leaking deck hatches is best done using butyl tape. The question is where and what tape should I buy, or is it all the same?
Arbo Products - Thoroughly Recommend Them For WIndow and Hatch Sealing
I can recommend a butyl sealant from Adshead Ratcliffe & Co Ltd who make the Arbo range of products; in particular Arbomast BR. I was advised by a marine fitter at Largs Marina that this is what they have been using to seal hatches and windows.
It has worked magnificently and I now have dry hatches once again. There is experience on these forums that other butyl sealants in a tube remain viscous but this product does firm up very well. The excess can be wiped away easily with a damp cloth. About a week later any additional excess can be cut with a knife to make a neat joint. It sets firm and I found that the additional excess just rubbed off with finger pressure.
I also had my windows professionally refurbished (Hadlow Marine) and they were returned to me with Arbosil GZ Mastic Strip on them. It couldn't have been easier to apply: offer up windows, tighten screws, job done. Again this has made the windows completely water tight including over some minor irregularities in the aluminium frame to GRP point.
Note that on the Hadlow web site they show how to cut the tape with a staggered cut so that a good seal is obtained at the joint.
I spread the sealant around the hatch flange and made sure the indents / channels were full. I used a plastic spatula to provide and even bed depth on the frame of around 1mm or less. The frame was then placed over the coaming and the screws tightened down to the final torque i.e. no bedding, initial screw down, waiting for a part cure, final screw down. This was not my idea and I got the tip from a US web site that has boaty repair advise. Unfortunately I don't have the link.
