And you could probably walk over the IJsselmeer:

A couple of years ago I came out of the Hook of Holland. The AIS screen was crazy.
We passed the Hook a few years ago and the returns overloaded my set, which failed to show some incoming ships. Luckily, we didn't hit anything & vice versa. I believe that newer sets are more forgiving.

I can’t get the map big enough on my phone but how many of them are tied up?

look at most marinas and you’ll see AIS from boats that haven’t been out in months.

Why is that ?

I'm in Burnham Yacht Harbour just now and there are 27 boats transmitting AIS. ???????????

We went down to check the boat and go out to set the sails for the first time. At about 11pm at home I remembered that I'd left the AIS including class B on.

I seem to vaguely recollect that AIS transponders are mandatory on all Dutch registered vessels, even on sailboats. If that is correct, that would explain the number of AIS targets in Dutch waters,

I've never heard that, and can't see how it could work.

You will be pleased to know that I have now turned mine off.

Yep, got that wrong.

Apparently, only mandatory in Holland of vessels longer than 20 metres irrespective of type of vessel. Not mandatory for leisure vessels less than 20 meters.

Is that deliberate for some reason or just the way it ended up?

I wasn’t meaning to offend hence the smilie. Sorry if I did but I think we’ve all been there and done that.

It was wired in by George at Fox's a few years ago. It does have the advantage that I can check to see if my boat has been stolen, but I do endeavour to turn it off, usually.

I am a past master in detecting micro-offence. I reckon I could make a career out of it.

Yup. Fantastic weekend. Wind and weather kind at last.

Great to see so many boats enjoining themselves.

When I came out of Titchmarsh on Sunday, there must have been 30 to 40
boats anchored in Hamford Water.
