I get the feeling the plot was written by someone with considerable small-boat experience...a great number of real hiccups and problems are reflected here, even in fun...
...unlike most modern sailing movies, which taking whopping liberties with how a sailing vessel operates and behaves, without even intending to be laughable...and thus they fail to use the real dynamics of sailing as plot-corners or as a means to add flavour and verisimilitude. Typically they're written by twits who have only commanded a laptop in a coffee-shop.
