Burnt Isle madness.

While negating our way south wards through the Burnt Isle narrows on sunday, we were literally atacked by 2 big motor cruisers, which blasted towards us from a point between the north and south sets of channel markers.
Causing a massive wake as they reached about 20 kts, at a distance of 10 yrds away, then carried on up into loch Riddon, as if nothing happened, leaving us to roll about like a cork.
Bloody twits, if you are reading this, I hope your, wellies fall off the next time you are walking across sharp pebbles.

He could've seen we was talking on the mobile and the boat was on au'opilot sticking to my rights in the middel of the channel. Clyde, you have a radio don't you?

Next time do a Pan Pan on ch16 informing all of the near miss, give the names and course of the vessels that you've seen navigating at high speed, and believed to be on autopilot without a lookout.

Ch 16 is recorded. If they should cause damage later, your message will add to the evidence against.

The same goes for reckless racing raggies too.

Eamon with 3 VHF on board you could have given them a treble mouthful.

I encounter what was probably the same pair some time after you on the journey back from Portavadie as I was approaching the Burnt Isles and they had just come from Loch Ridden and even although I turned into the fastest very close one I was tossed about all over the place by the tosser.

Channel, or anyone, should I want to issue a securite about a craft acting dangerously (and let me say, the yacht may be out of control through no fault of the skipper - the poor fellow might've taken seriously ill)

What is the protocol for the issue of a securite warning?
 
Did you get the names of the boats? If so let us all know. The area around Burnt Isles is an official No Wash Zone and I assume the people responsible can be charged, although I am not sure whether in practice that would happen. Although I have recently returned to being raggie, I am also a steward in the RSMYC which for those that don't know stands for Royal Scottish Motor Yacht Club and all members are informed about the rules in this area, in particular to slow right down. I would be surprised if the people you came across turn out to be members of the club but if they are I will write to them about it. The Kyles are simply stunning and I think any sensible and responsible boat owner will know the consequences of speeding in this area. My gin could get spilt for goodness sake! Seriously, wash is a nightmare in this area for boats at anchor and those irresponsible culprits should be named and shamed.
 
I am affraid this is a common complaint........many times at anchor at Colintrave we have had to suffer the wash from these idiots in their motor boats that seem to have no understanding of anyone else around them....as for the RSMYC in my experiance their members often are the culprits!!

I think a call on mobile phone to Coast guards would be more diplomatic unless of course you like the rocking and rolling feeling. Problem at Burnt Isles most mobile signals are useless.

All stations, all stations, all stations.

This is yacht 'Fulmar', yacht 'Fulmar, yacht 'Fulmar' I have just experienced a near miss with yacht 'Petrel' 'petrel' 'petrel' in the vicinity of [position], heading S, estimated speed of 12kn. Possibly not under command. Out.

Reason I'd stick to 16 is I want everyone in the vicinity to hear it, and I want it recorded by CG. Also if our rogue boat is under command he may well take a little more consideration upon hearing the report.

I dident get the names, but another forumite gave me the name of the smaller of the two boats, as it gave him a rough ride as well, the name was "Childs Play", the bigger boat accompnying it had its name obscured by its dinghy.
But its something to work on.
I certainly will be on guard for them next time I see them.
Thats 3 complaints about the same 2 boats now, all incidents in one day and close to each other.

I know a lot of RSMYC members and many of them have been yachties before moving to power and are considerate around yachts even those that are not ex yachties are also generaly considerate. So it is not fair to tar them with the same brush. The worse culprits tend to be those who have recently bought a large motor boat as their first boat, that scares me to hell!
 
Actually a white flare fired over them as a potential collision warning would work pretty well /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As a mobo (and occasional raggie) I can see no excuse for these idiots.

This is oft times recommended, even if tongue in cheek. However, white para flares are not often found in flare packs, and there wouldn't seem much point in wasting a white handheld. They'd probably come nearer to see what all the fuss was about.
