It is a used engine, a replacement for a poor refurb on it s predecessor. The regulator shaft was stiff and inconsistent so I reassembled it ( successfuly) . I adjusted the tickover to spec. It starts and ticks over readily then runs happily at power for hours. I have the old spare engine so I have swapped lift pumps, had the injector tested. By now everything has been disturbed.
Still it repeatedly died at the destination. as it died I tried to rev it up ( throttle way above the tickover stop) but it continued to dive below tickover then stop.
So many folk here and elsewhere have hepfully offered diiagnoses that have not fixed it.
On the hard I cannot synthesize running at power then stopping, so I wont know if I've fixed itor not without launching.
I now suspect the governor, but that's buried behind the back cover. It needs engine out to get to that.
have made two mistakes with a pro refurb and a swapout. #
I've had enough now. I have no confidencve in it I don't want to spoil any more seasons.
I would rather replace it than suffer another season of horrid passages knowing the risk of doing damage in a marina on arrival.
I plan to keep the boat for years and the bukh is already 37yrs old.
I've checked all the details now. I will probly order a new Beta 20 today.
It gives me twice the power at almost half the weight, smoother, and the install is not difficult,
