bukh trouble

It is a used engine, a replacement for a poor refurb on it s predecessor. The regulator shaft was stiff and inconsistent so I reassembled it ( successfuly) . I adjusted the tickover to spec. It starts and ticks over readily then runs happily at power for hours. I have the old spare engine so I have swapped lift pumps, had the injector tested. By now everything has been disturbed.

Still it repeatedly died at the destination. as it died I tried to rev it up ( throttle way above the tickover stop) but it continued to dive below tickover then stop.
So many folk here and elsewhere have hepfully offered diiagnoses that have not fixed it.
On the hard I cannot synthesize running at power then stopping, so I wont know if I've fixed itor not without launching.

I now suspect the governor, but that's buried behind the back cover. It needs engine out to get to that.
have made two mistakes with a pro refurb and a swapout. #
I've had enough now. I have no confidencve in it I don't want to spoil any more seasons.

I would rather replace it than suffer another season of horrid passages knowing the risk of doing damage in a marina on arrival.
I plan to keep the boat for years and the bukh is already 37yrs old.
I've checked all the details now. I will probly order a new Beta 20 today.
It gives me twice the power at almost half the weight, smoother, and the install is not difficult,

my tank i s above the engine so I dismiss the air in the fuel.
leaks would manifest in diesel in the bilges wuth a high tank

I understand your reasoning for changing the engine, but just as an FYI, both of the above points are incorrect. You can get fuel in the air no matter how high the tank. Air getting in does not necessarily mean fuel getting out, air can be sucked into the low pressure side of the system, but without any pressure it won't leak fuel when the engine is stopped. You can also get air in the system via the return circuit, which doesn't always leak fuel out.

Beta 20 is a cracking little engine, its what we have and they are great.

It does seem a bit weird its only when you arrive at your destination Hbr/marina I am guessing you have dissasembled the fuel lines, fuel tank tap and thourghly cleaned the tank checking for bits of crud that could block the fuel supply to the engine ?

My DV 20 definitely has a fuel return back to the tank. The injector leak-off pipe does go to a banjo bolt on the engine's filter, but that should be a 'T' junction - the other branch continues back to the main tank.

new engine arrives 20/6.
i now have two DV10s I am going to break. anyone want anything in particular please shout,

Thankyou guys, Another new filter then, that can do no harm.

Any idea why this only happens after a long run/hot but not when cold?
Do not forget the wee filter inside the lift pump. If the lift pump cover has a central screw then undo this and lift of the cover carefully to save the joint. There may be a small nylon basket type filter. This can be cleaned and put back. A friend had similar problems.
