Please can anyone tell me the thickness of a new cylinder head gasket for a BUKH DV10? I'm going to make one and I need to make sure I order the right thickness of gasket material.

The thickness required will be to achieve the correct compression ratio-21.5:1 from my recently aquired handbook-thank you Sugar Kane. A pre-compressed gasket-IE a used one-will be significantly different to a new one.

Measure the old one, add a few thou's-or fractions of a mm if you work in metric- and give it a go.

I have made many, many copper and aluminium head gaskets in my time, but not many for water cooled units.

I once got away with a home made head gasket on a Honda motocross bike-one of the early water cooled ones-by using an air cooled gasket of the correct bore size to seal the combustion chamber, adding a sheet of material around its outside-Hallite IIRC- punching holes with a hole punch and lead block in the right places for the water jacket holes and sealing with instant gasket.

It lasted the rest of the season without any trouble, even though the correct gasket became available and was kept in the spares box.

The trick here was knowing the compressed thickness of the air cooled gasket was slightly less than the Hallite-only a few thou. In use it sealed enough to keep the compression and water in the right places.

Your Bukh one might have to deal with keeping the oil in too......................................

Hi Parsifal, why make on when the correct thing can be purchased for a few quid from just down the road at

A few quid! £56 for a gasket for a single cylinder engine. Are you made of money?

A piece of suitable material, enough for two gaskets, will cost ca. £11. An hour with a piercing saw and the job's done.

One day God will punish BUKH for the prices they charge! :D

Out of interest what do you consider to be "suitable material"?

I have never seen a genuine Bukh gasket but I suspect it will have a soft metal ring folded top and bottom around the bore hole.

Without this, a short life can be expected. Perhaps find another 85mm head gasket and carefully unpeel it and fit it to your home made one.

Good luck.................................

It's called a fire ring. That's how they used to be, but for some time now BUKH have used the sandwich material I mentioned above.
