Bukh DV 20 thermostat

Before shelling out for a new one - I have found that u/s Bukh thermostats respond well to a good clean and de-scale! This has restored reliable operation on both my 'in service' and the spare.

Occasionally I give mine a soak in the kettle descaler fluid and as its hot it opens the thermo as well.. I tried wit with a weak mix to start and gradually increased it a bit until it began to gently fizz.

Thermostats these days are a rip off. The one on my Merc can only be bought with the housing costing £40, which is a lump of aluminium and doesn't wear out. It's only the actual capsule bit which occasionally needs replacing which is about a fiver for lesser vehicles.

Bloody hell, I wish Bukh were only £40. I’d have half a dozen.
Try £90 IIRC

Fortunately they seem to be very reliable. Mine is at least 21 years old and has never given any trouble.

I strongly suspect similar since the previous owner did limited amounts of work on the boat! I’m going to have a clean up of it this week and run some water through each stop point to check where the block is.

If you have an overheating problem, you might find that you need to run some descaler through the waterways, particularly the cylinder head. Over 17 years of Bukh ownership, I have had to do this three times, now.
