Hi all,
if one were to buy a circa 2006 Portofino 35 or Targa 38, what sort of annual maintenance budget would be sensible, to cover routine servicing as well as additional costs that come with a 17 year old vessel?

I can’t give you a hands on answer but have recently viewed a targa 38 and was told the last service came in at 7.5k.

They are on out drives which will require bellows and service every 2 years. It is whilst since I owned them so other will comment on the cost.

Engines should be £3k ish I would think. It is only oil / filters.

Lots goes wrong on a boat and your costs will be different if you diy it or call a company out for each fault.

Say another £2k but it depends on what goes wrong! Ovens / fridges / pumps / fans etc. the boats are old and things will go wrong. They go wrong on boats as well.

Supporting @jrudge £2k per year on bits that wear out, one year new camper cover, next year engine fire extinguishers, then new turbos, then complete leg overhaul, navigation upgrades, new tender another year, it goes on and on.
@Martxer is not far off at 7.5k if you include antifouling, anodes
DIY can reduce it but if your not into that, budget on £10k and you will have some change left over to put some fuel in. :)

Cost drivers regardless of the boat, however, larger/older boats tend to pose a greater risk to your wallet:

  • Depreciation
  • Maintenance and repair of boat interior and exterior, engines (varies greatly by make and model), driveline, electrical, and general equipment
  • Berth, own and fees when visiting places
  • Insurance
  • Fuel
  • Food and beverages at convenience prices
  • Navigation and other equipment purchases, upgrades and subscriptions
  • Space on the hard (winter)
  • Lift out and in

In no specific order, just to name some recurring budget items.

How long is bit of string?
How much spare time do you have ?
Is the boat to be kept locally or halfway across the planet.
Can you/are you prepared to do all/most/ not a lot to maintain the boat.
Is it vital that every single replacement item must have a Volvo Penta label on the box.
Do you know people who know people to contact get work done at less than main dealer prices.
There are folks on here who can and do run their boats on a "budget" ,simply due to being unable or unwilling to spend the money but it will take effort and time.
They are folks out there to whom their time is simply to valuable to waste on fixing boats, they really only want to hear when the boat can be used again and reach for the credit card.
Some folks simply would not be able to run a boat unless they sort everything.
Some folks can run a much nicer boat because they will do much of the work.
As for the newer boat equals less problems than older craft...Yea right....they may break down slightly less but due to advances in marine technology :ROFLMAO: cost more to fix and usually need specialist technology !
Welcome to the world of boating. Just dive in and take your chances with the rest us of , you will not regret it except financially of course.
One other comment, Covid resulted in some crazy price inflation, with some asking prices reaching 20/30 % of pre covid levels.
Things are returning to normality , however as an example, was aware of a Princess 330 in pretty reasonable condition being sold for £37.000 pre covid, there are two or three on the market now approaching £60K.
Would suggest that any buyer with bit of patience is in a very good position to drive very hard bargain indeed.
There are some very optimistic prices out there .:)
