Budget Foulies

At that price point you can get branded suits from the big chandlers. Advantage is you can try on and compare before you buy. Probably made in the same factory in China though.

Example Gill Cruiser Suit (similar specification) £149.95 in Force 4

That well known Marina.....

If you live anywhere hear Bluewater there is a monster shed near the entrance selling all sorts of outdoor clothing.Try before you buy in range of sizes from "VAST" to child.
Can vouch for some wet weather gear we bought there about two years ago, available with or without various linings as desired(or not).
We chose something in a violent bilous Red.

Bought a 'Goretex' jacket off ebay couple years ago - Yakida. Looked good and had all the bells and whistles. Started to laminate after three weeks sailing and started to leak through on my Coastal on a wet November's week. Got a deal on a Musto MPX at the Boatshow and chuffed.

As for the Coastal XM trousers which began to rip at the crutch on the same course...... Nice set of Musto HPX now.

Cheaper brands are fine for starting off but if you are going to do some more serious sailing it pays to start saving (I sold a load of dive gear to pay for it). It is miserable being on a boat for a wet winters holiday cruising in soaking cheap clothes.

I bought Navis breathable trousers on ebay early 2008, have worn them a lot as warm and comfortable. Hose them down with fresh water on the pontoon when showing salt stains. They still look and feel in good condition.
Got them from a UK supplier though, they were not too expensive, probably around £40 +.

I bought West Marine's Third Reef breathables for around $200 USD when the dollar was cheap. Seems good, but I have not given them enough hard treatment to rate their durability. On the West site, there were a few negative responses. They are still selling them tho, so must be reasonable.

Had them sent over here. No taxes charged.

Decathlon waterproofs

I bought a set from decathlon in france a couple of years ago for 40 euros and they have been great still in perfect condition and no sign of trouble with leaks. a bargain I thought.

I've used the breathable Decathlon set for three years of light coastal sailing and they have been great. IIRC, they were £30 for the jacket and £35 for the dungarees. I also have one of their thick, fleece lined (but non breathable) jackets for around £25. Can't fault them for the price.

I tried on a set of £100 oilies from Gaelforce last week. Seemed quite robust if not very sophisticated. I noticed that the last six inches of the collar did not zip up, relying on velcro. I envisaged the velcro giving way and the collar opening to form a neat funnel to channel water down my neck. Shame, cos otherwise they seem OK.
Force 4 do a set for £75. Anyone tried these?

My Decathlon oillies gave up after 5 years with some quite hard usage - really good for the price

Got 3 sets of Force 4 (I think Windward) about 4 years ago - if I remember they were £60/set.

Been excellent so far - though not breathable.
