Buckler Ketch on ebay

It's really sad to see what will once have been somebody's pride and joy in that sort of state.

Agreed, but it didn't just sink, it was going down slowly over a period of years so if it had been visited it could have been rescued. It was sort of respectable before it sank and could have been used for pottering about Portsmouth harbour.

Maybe, I shouldn't own up to actually owning one, but I did.
Terminal speed was about 5 knots, but it was great fun, everybody had a smile on there faces when we went out, great family boat as long as you didn't take sailing seriously. Sold it to a guy in Kent who had spent ages looking for one, as soon as his kids saw it, he was doomed in negotiating the price :)
He said he was going to sail it around from Southampton to home, it might have taken him awhile...

Spottydog5,

it's great to hear from you !

Have you owned or sailed other boats you could compare the Buckler against ?

Andy

Hiya Andy, Whilst I did quite a bit of sailing in my yoof, Mirrors, Wayfarers, etc and I also used to sail my dads Caprice. The only other sailing boat I've owned was an Alacrity. It was straight after the Bucker I switched to motor, I guess it may have turned me :)

Can we pit it against this daysailer please? :D

Great point Dan tribe

It's very easy to take the mickey out of peoples boats, but at least this one seems to have had some use and given that family a lot of pleasure. That alone makes it more valuable than many of the smarter yachts I see parked in marinas unused for months on end.

spot on - with your usual perceptiveness

I know that cross posting is sometimes frowned upion

but I posted the ad on the US trailer sailer forum

and a mac owner posted his repsonse to the boat here

Thank you Searush for the very interesting 1974 Buckler Ketch information.

And thank you Dylan for letting the US know about these boats so if anyone does cross the Atlantic in one there'll be hordes of fans waiting.

I've been fighting off posting an "Arrr ha, me hearties" ever since I first clapped eyes on the photos. Imagine what it would be like for a 7 year old first seeing one....

I think that's the whole point.

A small, low priced family boat with relatively large accom in 2 seperate cabins & with a deep safe & sprayfree cockpit in the centre where sea motion is at a minimum. Add in the large "sundeck areas" when at anchor & you have a boat designed for pottering in estuaries & sheltered water with the whole family.

No-one would consider it a sleek passage maker, especially with a Watermota Shrimp & a 1 gall fuel tank, the range must be only 20-30 miles, much less if into a headwind!!

I always smile when I see one - it's that sort of fun boat & cheers me up.

You're so right Searush, perfect for encouraging the whole family to go boating, starting to wish I hadn't sold her :)

It's a lot of boat for 2.5k. Not sure I can see how the o/b works in a well in the cockpit, it must be a fair bit below the cockpit floor. Might be hard to get to for starting or maintaining.

If you look at the pictures it's attached to the transom.

If it's fun there's not much more you need really.
