Heard from a...umm..arr....reliable source, I think, that the BSS will be mandatory for boats in coastal waters. Anyone heard the same or know anything about it. Its gonna cause me a bit of a headache if its brought in!

Barry, relax, this is nonsense. It would have to be brought in by Act of Parliament because Harbours in the main are not under one authority unlike the rivers/canals. Ergo if the P.L.A. brought it in they couldn't enforce it in St. Kats or S.Dock. Similarly if Hampshire CC brought it in for the Hamble they couldn't enforce it in Cowes or even the Beaulie (sp?). If say Ramsgate (council owned) brought it in Dover Harbour Board (operated independent) would just rub their hands with glee and collect all the Ramsgate business - get my drift?
The Rivers/Canals requirement was/is just the whim of some dudes empire building who don't know the blunt end from the sharp end which is why it has undergone so many changes since its inception.

If it ever does come in it may be quicker and cheaper to change my boat, I would bet more offshore boats are probably in better safety condition than many canal or river boats.

Happy sailing
