As it's called Practical Boat Owner ...
I've a wooden boat and need to be able to touch up varnish and paint when afloat. In the past the sheer fag of trying to keep brushes soft and the impossibility of cleaning them was a disincentive to getting a brush out when I should. Following a chat with a house painter, I've had a Brush Mate Trade 4+ (see *) on board for two years now, with brushes for Epiphanes Rapidclear, Cetol, undercoat and gloss. Wipe the excess off before the brush goes in the box, wipe it again before use, and Bob appears to be my uncle. The refill pads last about 6 months. The box sits in a cockpit locker where it is wedged upright, and I spent some time adjusting the brush clips to fit my brushes - they do not fall out when heeled which, being a 1940s design, we do quite a lot. I can use decent brushes and keep them in continuous use for years (they need to be wooden handles with a vapour box proof finish) - I have been doing the same for brushes ashore for longer.
