My ageing Seal 22 has come to the point where the Gelcoat has a few too many scuffs & filled bits to be restored with a cutback & polish. I plan to repaint before next season. I have previously carried out a similar task on a Wayfarer dinghy with International Perfectiom 2 pack Poly using brush followed with paint pad - superb finish. But that was on a hot August W/E.

Conditions now are less than ideal for 2 pack outside!

I am planning to use a more tolerant (and cheaper) one can product - I am not expecting perfection.

I almost went for the commercial vehicle coach paint (polyurethane), but wasn,t convinced of its suitability for application outside at the moment. This is about £14/litre

Only slightly dearer is Rylards yacht enamel (http://www.indestructiblepaint.co.uk/). has anyone tried this?
Rylards seem to be one of those great unsung heroes of the marine trade that quietly get on with it & have been very helpful with advice. However, I have yet to find anyone that has personal experience of anything except their varnishes - these are excellent & much cheaper than the usual 2 big name brands.

Any suggestions/opinions welcome,

Phil

I'm going to use their paint on my boat and so far have only tried their undercoat.
If the gloss quality goes with the undercoat it will be blooming perfect, I brused it on with a cheap brush on epoxy resin that had been rubbed down with P80 paper and the result is unbelievable (and I'm fussy !!)

I did my 32 feet twoo years ago with 1-pot poplyurethane from International. Brushed on with great result. You can see, with some difficulty, the brush strokes.
Did it in early spring but inside at temp of approx. 14C.

Have a look at www.yachtpaint.com thats the site of International. It has great info on all aspects of painting.

Happy saling, Steffen

I painted a Vivacity 20 with Toplac several years ago and I was pleased with the result - as always the secret is in the preparation and a warm windless day.

painting outside

whatever you do, don't use 2-pack outside, even in summer. if it gets damp e.g. dew within 24 hours it will turn chalky within a few months and all your money & hard work will be for nothing. international 1-pack gives a good finish and lasts quite well.

i recommend applying gloss with a roller then laying off with a good-quality brush or one of those foam brushes.

Thanks for all the advice.

It confirms most of what I have been advised by Rylards - stick to a conventional high quality one pack.

They were fairly insistent that I use a GRP Etch primer to ensure a good bond. They also recommended an undercoat to avoid having to rely on several gloss coats for obliteration of any colour variation from filler/stoppers used in preperation. This leaves the gloss to ... well, put a gloss on it!

It will take a few W/Es to get all rubbed/filled/stripped & masked up. I will have to choose days carefully - >8 deg C all day! May even be putting off till spring, but I'll try it out on the transom only first, as a dummy run.

Will probably be using small roller and large ANSA brand paint pad (worked well on the Wayfarer).

Well, paint is ordered, better get cracking.

Cheers,

Phil
