Anyone know or care to make an educated guess as to the run time from Brundall to Lowestoft, and from Lowestoft to St Katarines Dock? Boat should cruise quite happily at 20 knots (dependant on weather of course).

26 nm Brundall to Lowestoft,115nm Lowestoft to St Kats, about 9 hours as some is at river speeds.
 
Quite a long run to do in one go and whilst tides not necessarily an issues on a mobo probably better to have it going in the same direction as you so worth planing. When we went to St Kats (moored in Lowestoft) we went down to the Orwell and Blackwater first and went round to St Kats from Bradwell. Another option is to go from Lowestoft to the Medway and then do the last run up the Thames the next day. Depends whether you want to take a leisurely trip of push on and do it in a day

If you leave Lowestoft at the correct time you will have a the tide with you all the way to St Kats (up to about 5 knots for some of the trip) this will ensure you arrive in time to lock in to St Kats HW-2 to HW+1 1/2
 
I used to work as the delivery skipper for Broom boats so have done that trip many times over the years. As previously mentioned 8-9 hours is about right. Dependent on the boat/weather etc it can be quite a slog in one go, especially as you need to time it right for the lock opening times at St Kats. It also depends on the bridge opening times at Great Yarmouth or lock/bridges at Lowestoft if it is even possible to do it in one go. Best to get on the sea side of the locks or bridges the day before so you can leave at the best time for the lock at St Kats.

We had planned to go to St Kats a few weeks a go on the families Powles 38 but weather put paid to it, stopping somewhere on the river Orwell and then going from there to St Kats. Much easier than doing it in one go.

P.S If you leave via Great Yarmouth you may even have the pleasure of talking to me on ch12 as I'm one of the Port Control Officers there. Just don't forget to call up at the lifeboat staion before leaving ;-)

Pretty fair assumption when you mention Brundall :D It's a Broom 42 cl and it would be the delivery run to our base on the Thames.

To be honest it's SWMBO who's pushing to bring her back by sea, and in an ideal world I'd agree. We should complete on Monday but it's been so fraught thus far (nothing to do with the broker or vendor but the banks/finance has been a nightmare) that it could slip to Tuesday or Wednesday. We would have limited time off, would only be able to try and arrange days off at short notice, and as far as tides are concerned we probably couldn't have picked a worse week. Weekends are out as we both work Saturdays and Sundays, and also, as it's going to be home, you can't afford delays or getting stuck somewhere. Much as though it seems a crying shame to do it, I think realistically delivery by road is the safest bet. We'll have plenty of time in the remainder of the season to go and have a play in deep water.

Or you could have a delivery skipper take her, they would then be able to give a report on how the boat performed, anything that needs attention etc. Costs would be the skipper, fuel, expenses (such as food and mooring costs if not able to complete in one day) dependent on road haulage costs can often come in cheaper.

Who did you buy her from? Assume broker, if so they should be able to advise on both options and associated costs if they haven't already
 
I've done this trip several times in my previous boat, also a Broom 42, and it's an enjoyable trip to do. I looked up my route plans and you're looking at about 130nms from Lowestoft hbr entrance to St. Kats. I found top cruising speed for comfort & economy was 18 knots though it's 10 knots from above QE2 bridge at best as you will be on Port of London's radar from that point on and they can get rude if they think you're speeding! They get you at the Thames Barrier as that's when you need to identify yourself on VHF.

I've generally broken the trip at Shotley, primarily because the diesel there was cheaper than on the Broads or Thames and it's not far off the route and the marina eatery is good. Plus it means you can plan to use the tides in your favour both ways.

The 42's a fine boat to do the trip, even if it gets a bit rough, I just hope you've got the hydraulic arch for the Thames bridges.

The tides are also fine for an early evening arrival for the next few days.

For the record, when you leave St Kats you'll probably go as the tide is still rising and helping you but that will mean that clearance on Hammersmith Bridge can be tight, even with the arch down! The problem you may have is that this week the high water times to leave St Kats to go upriver will be v early morning (if St Kat's will open that early) or early evening - meaning that you'll get to Teddington at dusk or dark. If you know the river well no problem but can be an issue to others.

Thankfully yes.

Decided it's going to be delivery by road. Just can't get the time off to do this by sea. Current boat is going by road so can dovetail the two.

Many thanks for your replies and advice. All very much appreciated. I suppose I should be getting excited but given the traumas so far I don't think I'll believe it until she's actually on her new berth.
