Browny yellow ,stain above water line

We have some called Y10. "The original fibreglass stain remover".

It cost a lot for not much of the gunk (£10 for a smallish pot) but it goes a long way. Works a treat on the stains you're talking about. I think it's oxalic acid based... probably just a thickened version of it.

Yes Y10 contains oxalic acid.

You can make a cheap substitute by thickening a nearly saturated solution with wallpaper paste.

Take care though oxalic acid is toxic by ingestion and skin absorption. Wear gloves and goggles and wash any splashes off the skin promptly .

Haha no, I wasn't thinking of bleaching my hair.

I had heard of the wallpaper paste method, but also heard that it can difficult to remove if it dries too much, whereas gel should just rinse off. I assume that a strong enough solution would overcome any dilution by the hair gel.

I guess there's always the "Something about Mary" method of adding a coagulant.

Do not let oxalic acid mixed with wallpaper paste dry, it is then very difficult to remove!! When I liberally coated one side of my 48' boat I hadn't thought of it drying.....................:ambivalence:

I've never had reason to thicken it.

Applied by ruller, brush, cloth or sponge it works fine, rather like washing the stain of. Rather repeat than leave on, IMO

Only add a little wall paper paste just enough to stop the liquid running straight off again. It works its magic in about 2 mins and just wash off with water.
Always fascinating watching the colour returning before you very eyes in few seconds.
Seems to be very prevalent in areas with high iron content in water and stain seems to appear above conatct with water ????
