Broom or Bust?

I dont know if that is true or not, however the following has been widly reported:

Brooms were sold by the family (Martin Broom?) last month as his children had apparently shown no interest in running the business
Broom boats have been bought by local businessmen, familiar with the brand, the company and the history
The new owners are by all accounts well funded and plan a number of new models and updates.

That is the fact as I understand it.

Please be aware, the spreading of unfounded rumours, especially damaging rumours such as a company going bust or experiencing financial difficulties are grossly unfair to all those involved. Unless you have any real reason to suspect the company may be bust, rather than the 'I heard a rumour' **** then perhaps keep it to yourself.

Companys big and small are not having a great time and the spreading of unsubstantiated rumours is not in the least bit helpful or sendible.

Brooms

Spoke to Jason Boast at Brooms on Saturday and it would appear the opposite is true! A lot of enthusiasm about potential new products now the new owners are on board.

so true.....

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I moor my Broom at the yard and was there yesterday. As I understand it, C.J. Broom & co. Ltd. have gone! All the workforce have gone apart from those completing two remaining builds. However, Broom Boats are still very active with Sales and the engineering side, complete with the Marina, and some staff will remain for these activities. I am at this time extremly sorry for this dedicated, respected & professional group of workers in losing their jobs, and I wish them all the very best of luck in finding new jobs in this current climate. Should any of them start a new business,I am sure there will be many Broom owners will make use of their many years of skills.

Cant believe it, I thought the new owners would honour the staff there jobs for the future, is it true that they took them on only to sack them a few weeks after? if so just typical of companies these days, everyones just a number now, glad ive been on my own since 1990.

I know things have been slow for them, they had there good days building 450s, seems now thats all gone in this current climate, will they be at the show?

Yes its 100% true, looks like the 2 owners bought brooms, stripped it of all assets, run up usuall credits to small suppliers then bumped the company.

There are 2 boats in build, 1 nearly finished all but some cosmetic furnishings, but now being held by the administrators.

How sorry would you feel for 2 buyers spending 500k plus on a new boat not to have a warranty from the builder, only support from say volvo on the engines.

They wont be at the show for sure.

All staff gone, gates locked.

Surely someone must have seen this coming?.

If you cant ask the question on an open forum then where do you ask it?

Sorry VP, Boat Shows gone for them as well I believe, but as I only heard at about 7 o'clock last night I cannot be sure, the sales side may think otherwise when the time comes, as the latest Brokerage list has a flyer attached saying Stand 210-212 on 10th to 19th Sept. to visit.
As I under stand, the two guys who took over as chairman & M.D. are really just accountants. If I am wrong in any of this, I apologise, but if no statement of facts are available, they must expect little else!!

Sounds like far too much optimism on Saturday to me and why not !

Could this be a 'Chappel scam' with a twist, where the company wipes off all debts and starts with a clean sheet.
Would they just need a fall guy who could be well paid as an employee in a new company run by a family member (after they change their minds ) and buy it from the administrators.

Dont really agree with you on this Jez. I dont think there was anything malicious in the question; he was asking for clarification. Its not as though he went on to make alot of wild unsubstantiated claims. If all was well, I'm sure we would have got responses to substantiate that, and the matter put to bed.
Unfortunately, it seems he was better informed than the rest of us ...

OK, so in this instance the rumours, sadly, seem to be correct.

However, my main issue was the OP stated by saying by starting with a statement, one that had merely been herad and only then asking a question.

Had it been, 'I drove pastt he gates, all was locked up and a big sign saying closed, whats happeneing?' then fair enough because that was reporting actual events witnessed by the OP.

Questioning rumours simply over heard of been told to third (or fourth, fifth, sixth???) hand is still, imo, dangerous and unconstructive.

Even in this instance where it does indeed appear that Broom have gone (reported by someone who actually has first hand knowlege), I still have an issue with outright rumour being reported.

I may be wrong, but there are differences in the details and questions that can be asked.

I heard a rumour that YBW is run by Smurfs - true of false?...

If this news is true, it is a great shame. I have always had a lot of respect for Martin Broom and his products.

When we had the Atlantic agency we often traded in Broom boats against new Atlantic's and we always had a very good relationship with both Martin Broom and his staff.

They always looked at our boats and we at theirs at boat shows. When we launched our Atlantic 50 in 2000about 6 months ahead of Broom's 50, , I remember showing Martin Broom over the boat myself and he was very complimentary, a real old school gentleman of the industry.
We had very competitive products often competing for the same client but we could always call and talk to each other about any of our boats and their values etcetera.

It is no secret that the market is not easy for any new boat builder at this time and I for one will be sorry to learn it is true if they have gone for good.

In my opinion Broom are one of the good guys who deserved to stay and get through these tough economic times.

Well, I think he started with a question ;) And he didnt substantiate how/where/why he had heard the rumour so it is speculation on both sides, I guess.
One might note that other comments in this thread make some more wild accusations...

I am a bit touchy about my weight and blue features....

We have not received any official statement from Brooms as of yet.

Yes def 2 accountants from what ive been told, and not daft ones at that!

The latest information from Brundall is that JonRob's information is spot on, CJ Broom & Son are in the hands of the liquidator whereas Broom Boats continues.

I doubt anybody's surprised that the new boatbuilding side has been losing money compared to a profitable brokerage, marina & aftermarket business. There are certainly staff on site today and they seem to believe that there is a future and that the future will include building new boats though seriously revamped from the current range.

We need to let the dust settle but as a Broom owner I know that I still own a quality product and I'm not concerned about future second hand values - I just look at the prices 20 year old Broom still make!
