Broom as a live aboard/solo cruising boat

Boaters in the dim and distance past seem to have managed without bow/stern thrusters, far as am aware this did not detract from their enjoyment of boating one iota.
Boat less likely to be moored in a marina awaiting a visit from whoever mends this stuff when it goes wrong, rendering the boat imobile due to the skippers reluctance to use the boat without this gadget. ?
Adore my bowthruster but its absence does not render the boat unusable.
Same with anything. My TR6 doesn't have power steering, auto box, electric windows, sat nav and all the other gadgets the Merc or even the Up has. I could drive it to Scotland but I wouldn't chose to!

A very good point..................when you have two boats to choose from, most folks only have one ?
Do have a friend with boat with IPS, he has often commented it gave sufficient confidence to use the boat more.

Anybody got anything positive or negative on Westwood A38? For sale at same place as a Broom I was going to go see. Rather more expensive but much newer, quite Broomlike
Westwood A38 for sale UK, Westwood boats for sale, Westwood used boat sales, Westwood Motor Boats For Sale 2008 Westwood A38 - Apollo Duck
if it were me i would want twin engines, if you plan on going through canals, the single may be a bonus to you. For me too, the Dark Blue hull is not my thing, would prefer White

A nice vessel with a lot of useful equipment, hydraulic radar arch, onboard genset etc but........
It doesn't indicate the draught which may be an issue on some inland waterways and I think the price is quite high due to it's location.

Thats a (rather nice!) Westwood fit out of an Atlantic 38 hull. They're built in the Netherlands and more usually have twin engines. Very nice boats with a layout very similar to the broom 38cl / Broom 39.

Says 3.22 ft draft which is OK, if you mean air draft, I've asked. It has folding arch but fixed screens. The Brooms like that quote around 3.1m as opposed to 2.82 for the Ocean 34 which I assume with screens folded.
I meant to ask - are there problems with maintaining seal on a folding screen?

Yes, the single engine is a bit discouraging but worth having a look at I think.

The underwater hull shot looks like it is just the sort of boat I suggested earlier. Long keel/skeg for directional stability and protection of the prop and enough power to cruise at respectable speed at sea. This style of boat is popular in the Netherlands as it is a better compromise for mixed inland and sea use that twin screw deep V planing boats. Also looks a step up in terms of kit and finish although surprised it only has a manual windlass, but maybe that is because there is not a lot of anchoring on the Thames!

We have looked at several Westwoods over the years and overall they are a nice boat and would certainly do what you are planning to do.

Perhaps just our perspective but we haven’t liked them as much as a Brooms or Haines and think that the fit out isn’t quite to their standard but not the an extent that I would see a problem. Those steps onto the bathing platform always felt a bit dodgy to us as the bottom step is close to the edge off the bathing platform. That said the one in the photo doesn’t look as bad as those we have looked at.

On the single engine I would be dubious about 315hp being sufficient to push it along at much over 10 knots at sea but that might be entirely acceptable (it would be for me). I know that I have advocated twins on the basis of enhanced manoeuvrability and redundancy but when we last changed I would actually have preferred a single if I could have found the right boat with one. With additional fuel filtration and both bow and stern thrusters the benefits of more room in the engine bay and protected prop as described by Tranona and only one engine to maintain are persuasive factors. That said, having gone with twins again I probably wouldn’t swap but it would be a finely balanced decision.

Worth a look I would say.

Well, an update and unfortunately this plan is going to have to wait or be somewhat changed.
On Saturday last, I found this boat online and it seemed absolutely ideal:
Only concern was that is is single engined but it is much newer than the other boats I was considering.
I made up my mind to call them Monday to go see it as it is only about 30 miles from where i live
I’d got the name of a local surveyor from
I’d sent off a mail to a reasonably local marine electronics company to get a budget figure for a plotter, radar and autopilot as it has none

I have had a chest infection for about a week but figured i’d be OK for the drive there and back. However, on Sunday night, I woke at 2:00 with a huge coughing fit and pains in my chest. By 7:00 I was feeling worse and sweating like a pig so phoned 111 who told me to call 999.
So I ended up in Norwich on Monday, not at the boat yard but in NNUH being treated for acute respiratory distress and pneumonia.
I am improving now and am on a conventional ward after having three days in HDU on IV antibiotics, fluids, salts and oxygen. Son number one has been down from Newcastle to see me and he and the doctor have given me the lecture about living alone in a damp cottage and the “lunacy” of thinking about living on a boat “at my age”.

So, I'm going to go stay with son for a while when i get out then go away for some warmth somewhere, probably Canaries, and have a think about what to do. I’d still like to get a boat but probably be spending weekend and weeks on it rather than semi-permanent.
Thanks for all the help, I'll be back when I have a better idea.

So sorry to hear this, look after yourself and get well soon.

Blimey, sorry to hear this and hope you make a swift and full recovery.Fully understand that you have been given pause for thought and look forward to hearing your ideas post recuperation.

FWIW that A350 would be ideal for weekends / a week or two aboard as well as for longer periods but that consideration is for another day I guess.

Look after yourself.
