Following our near death experience with Venetian Princess, SWMBO and I were looking at boats last night that might be in budget (if we asked nicely) when a Broom 35 Sedan in Essex hove into view.

I have no idea if it is available or much more than that it seems to have the sort of qualities that SWMBO is looking for (main saloon at deck level with open aft deck, flybridge for me to hide on and not so much dosh that the kids will starve).

I know the European model - I cruised in company with one through Holland in the 70's and did a couple of delivery trips on her which were fine. I know nothing about the Sedan.

I know it's a Broom and that retirement therefore looms (in my dreams - and sorry to all Broom owners everywhere for this worn-out joke) and I am not sure if the larger engines will have done well if the boat has been cruising the Broads or extensively inland.

Any knowledge/advice/keep away messages would be gratefully received before we start any viewings. Also if there are any Venetian Princesses out there can you tip me off?

That was the first one we looked at - Lakme.

Needs lots of work to the interior and several dings on the hull. In fairness it was a particularly manky day and not the best to impress. Engines winterised so no idea how they run.

The brokers called a week later and suggested we make offer but not wishing to insult we declined.

SWMBO did not like it - no doubt the brass plaque saying "Screw Room" on the entrance to the main cabin and another making reference to kissing a certain part of the owner's anatomy may have help form her view of how the boat has lived in recent years.

At least no one had my sat nav away in Bray but the waiter in Brown's Windsor did drop the fish pie on the floor. I am sure it wasn't scooped up and re-served.

The Broom Sedan is an excellent boat and despite what you may think, has a different hull to the European.
The flybridge is a bit small but fine as a driving position only.
Variety of engines again. Early ones mainly Perkins HT6354 are now a bit long in the tooth. Some of the later ones had Ford engines which are probably a better bet for spares.
Same hull, but built by Broom for Berthons, Lymington is Broom Solent 35. Currently one of few made for sale, with VP 200hp. Pretty certain was rather nice boat with better flybridge. May be too expensive.

Oops - hope I haven't offended Mr Lakme - just telling it like it is.

The info on the Broom is very helpful. Shame the Solent is at Kip Marina as oil reserves are already threatened by our boat inspection trips - now looking to do Norfolk and the Midlands for 35 Sedan.

Broom has always been a quality boat IMHO and our old Ocean 37 was very good - just suffered with Perkins mechanicals. Friend who has an O37 suffers the same.

Obviously not that many of the Sedan models are about - there is one in Italy at £37.5K which could justify a weekend away.

I remember the signs, the previous owner to me did indeed use it as "quiet place" and in fact had a heart attack while aboard "on the job" so to speak!

The lockkeeper at Temple Lock always gave me a wink whenever we went through.

I agree that it has not been looked after last couple of years, and I can well believe the dinks in the hull having seen it handled.

However the engines were pretty good and they cost the most to fix?

I know he has had three offers (all a lot more than the one in Swansea) and refused them all, hence maybe it is a sellers market after all!

Go on, buy the Broom and join the Broom Owners Club!!

Well SWMBO said "no" to Lakme and that's good enough for me (if I wish to see tomorrow). Not sure I shall share the history with her, though /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I find it hard to believe I am thinking about a Broom.

I called Broom's Brokerage as they have one on their books (definitely the owner is/was on the Forum but I cannot remember his name) - a nice rambling call where they couldn't really tell me anything other than to look on their website. Just waiting for their expert to call me back.

Yep,

That Broom 35 belongs to a Forumite...SoulFireMage and he last posted on the 31/01/2007. I am sure he is keen to sell her and seemed to look after her a lot. I felt at the time that it was a lot of boat for the money!

Maybe worth asking Keith to send him an email to get in contact or check his PM's!

Well we thought we'd test the water so to speak. Had some interesting swap proposals, too. Not holding our breath but will be interesting to see where we are on Sunday morning.

Hi is it is SoulFiremage's Brrm then it is is a nice one, Jim helped him deliver his new boat a while ago and when I went to pick him up I had a quick look at the broom, looked very impressive.
 
We looked at one a couple of years ago - very nice and built to the usual Broom standard. Went for an Ocean 37 in the end because bags more space for a similar (ish) price.

The are a couple on Boats and Outboards - one in Norfolk and one Essex so it may be the ones you already know about.

SWMBO has views on the Ocean 37 but as there are owners out there (including my two best boaty chums who both have O37's) I'll say nowt.

Have the details on the Essex and Norfolk boats - there is one in Wales but something is telling me to stay clear /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Hi guys,

I'm sorry I haven't been on for a long time, been otherwise engaged.

Silver Lady has sold now however :-).

We're getting a lot of time on Dreamfinder, and I've finally got her looking a lot younger. There's some work to do to get her up to scratch, however days of teflon waxing her and chrome polishing have made a huge difference :-).

Since someone has mentioned Jim at Marvin Marine, yes, he comes highly recommended /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.
