Hi all, I’m things about my next boat. Am 99% set on a Broom (currently have a 32, but want to have sea going potential).
There are a couple of boats on the market that interest me. Though I’ve not sold mine as yet. A 345 that has been on the market for ages in Burnham On Crouch. Any idea why is it isn’t selling? It hasYanmar 6LPA-DTP engines. Also a 37 has just come to the market on the Thames with 225hp Ford Sabre’s. Are these engines too old and unusual to be a good long term bet? Are they smokey? Window shopping at present but would like to be in the know if I decide to move forward. Also, if you have any other suggestions for twin shaft drive with good accommodation in the 60k to 90k price range. Thanks in advance for your advice.

If the 345 is called Barella l I re engined it in 2004 It previously had mercruisers in it .
The 37 is a better sea boat as the 345 is just the old 33 hull .
However the 37 with the 225s will Be really under powered plus spares for the old sabres are scarce now , you cannot get pistons etc .
where are these advertised I can take a look at the adverts as I think I know both boats
ive just found these 2 , yes it’s barella at Burnham , the 37 I don’t know it .

Wasn't the 39 a lengthened 37? Might give more options because more were built.

Also the 36 slotted in once the 37 became the 39

Thanks VP I’ll private message you.

The 37 & 39 are part of Brooms Offshore range and have deep vee hulls so draw 4ft 3in. Not ideal for inland waters but great for sea. Volvo Penta TAMD61A's would probably be preferable engines.
There's on in Newark Marina also but it has 200hp 41B's

Thanks Ferris. Not sure which of the bunch is best but the 36 and 39 look like good options too.
The 37 is for sale with TBS and I the 345 is for sale with Clarke and Carter.

BTW, the 37 is with TBS and the 345 is with Clarke and Carter.

Thanks Dino, I’ve also seen a very nice looking Turbo 36 for sale at boats.co.uk for £79k which I thin has the engines you refer to. But would this be too juicy at sea and too impractical inland? 90% of our boating will be on the Thames. We want the full width aft cabin.

I presume youre talking about the later Broom 37 rather than the 37 Continental? I used to own a 1989 Broom 37 myself

Mine also had the Sabre engines. Yes they were a touch smokey but not obviously so. They also drank a bit of oil too and had an exhaust drone which was a bit irritating on long passages. Other than that I thought the engines suited the boat well. Despite having a planing hull, the 37 also has a substantial keel so its never going to be a 30kt+ speedster. In fact I used to get about 25kts max out of her and cruised at around 18kts. The hull was actually pretty good at sea and we crossed the Channel a number of times in her. The only small criticism I would have is that the hull was a bit tender in big quartering seas because of that keel but nothing you couldnt control easily with the steering; of course the upside is that the keel made her very docile to manoeuvre at marina speeds

Other than that she was standard Broom fare inside. Very traditional joinery and upholstery but well built and nicely designed

As ever whether the Broom 37 on the Thames is worth considering is going to be down to condition. I hear what VP says about spares but I wouldnt be too scared of the Sabre engines providing a thorough engine survey came up clean

Thanks Mike. Really interesting to hear your experience of a 37. Yes, it’s the later 37 we like. And yours was a handsome beast. Good tip re the engine survey.
