Hi all, just wondering at what age should bronze through hulls be changed (if no other signs of issues)?
Never, unless they are damaged.Hi all, just wondering at what age should bronze through hulls be changed (if no other signs of issues)?
Completely agree. If they’re functioning correctly and no sign of damage why would you want or need to replace them?Never, unless they are damaged.
Unless they are made of Admiralty Bronze or Manganese Bronze, which are no more than brass.Never, unless they are damaged.
When did the diver last go down & check?May still have the same fittings today ?
Blake's seacocks have been made from DZR since the mid-80s. Mine were installed in 1985, still in good condition, definitely DZR.
That is not what the recent surveyor on my boat said regardless of the fact they were replaced 2021, bronze through hulls with stainless ball valves from Lymington Chandler. He said both needed changing. He also said(in my view over cautious) that the 5 year old main outboard engine needed servicing by a Yamaha dealer which with the cost of lift out and in plus the service being the wrong side of £1000 killed the sale. This was despite my offer to show the records of my servicing oil/filter/gear oil and new impeller each year. He would not accept self servicing as ok!Never, unless they are damaged.

Some surveyors display ignorance on this subject, including ones that write in PBO. Stainless is not necessarily the best material as it is prone to crevice corrosion in the threads although assembly with lots of sealant will minimise the chance of water getting at the threads. That is not what the recent surveyor on my boat said regardless of the fact they were replaced 2021, bronze through hulls with stainless ball valves from Lymington Chandler. Thanks all and will just change the 2 sticking seackoc valves I have then and of course check the rest when out the water.
You don't say what type of valves they are. Sticking ball valves can often be freed by cleaning the exposed edge of the ball particularly on the sea side where deposits can accumulate. Thanks all and will just change the 2 sticking seackoc valves I have then and of course check the rest when out the water.
