Hi,

Anyone have any dealings with the brokers in the Poole area that they can recommend (or not by PM)??

Preferably no sale no fee and that still allows me to advertise privately if I want to.. Obviously low commission/fee rates would be good too..

Putting the boat up for sale and will get something different once sold.. Haven't decided what exactly will get us on the water next yet but rather get through the sale before getting excited about something else.. :)

Thanks..

Guy at Cobb's Quay, seems honest, can't remember his name.(not the Quay itself, but the other place alongside).

I have used Adam Baker at Global Yacht Brokers. Really genuine and top bloke. Recognises both sides of the transaction, well connected, trustworthy etc.

not in Poole, but I have just instructed SD Marine in Hamble point to sell my Hardy, having called around a lot of brokers to compare rates and possible discounts of etc etc (and I mean, a lot!) , Ian at SD Marine was the only one to keep in constant touch with me. He didn't chase, but he let me know in no uncertain terms he wanted to have my boat listed with him and kept in communication. I got quite a different impression from quite a few of the brokers I called!

fwiw I have previously bought & sold from Ancasta in Port Hamble and received good service...

If your boat is under 10m and you are happy to pay for it to be in their sales area, Parkstone Bay Marina seem to be able to turn boats around pretty quickly. I sold my Monterey 250cr through them over the winter period and it was painless enough. Claire is the broker there and very pleasant to deal with. I normally keep an eye on their web site in case something comes up that tickles my fancy.

8% commission plus VAT which is pretty standard. I think their sales area cost is about £100 per month but it means it's parked on one of their special trailers out of the water ready for survey.

+1 for PBM. Brokerage boats are well displayed there. I recall that I paid 6% + VAT when they sold a boat for me 5 years ago.

From seeing how they looked after boats left with them I wouldn't be trusting them with mine.

From a buyers perspective (within the last 6 months) I have viewed boats with Clipper (at Cobbs), Harbour Yachts (next to Cobbs) and Parkstone Bay Marina.

All of them were pleasant to to deal with and as a first time buyer they were all happy to explain things at a basic level. If I were selling, then the follow up e-mails (i.e. trying to achieve a sale) were better from Clare at Parkstone Bay Marina - not pushy but regular contact with me as a prospective buyer to see how we were getting on and updating us with any new stock.

I just happen to have the guy from Harbour Yachts business card sat in front of me and probably still have a contact at each of the others if you want them although I am sure they are on their respective websites.

Ended up buying from a brokerage at Port Hamble in the end as it was the right boat for us.

One thought I have had on most brokers is that the pictures on websites / sales particulars they supply aren't great, but I guess it's a little like estate agents in that respect with some better than others.

Your little beauty will sell itself , I'd have started with an eBay advert and saved the commission .

Hi Paul, it did cross my mind, but then every time someone wanted to view I would need to drive down, show them over the boat etc etc... I hope Seabird will sell quickly and I will get the price I want even after commission so hopefully won't live to regret my decision...

Thanks for the heads up, I will have a look.

But to be honest I would never intend just to leave Seabird in their hands, I will be making sure it is always looking its best... you got to put in some effort if you want to sell your boat for the best money.

When we were looking at boats in the UK, SD Marine were the most proactive in calling me and drawing my attention to suitable boats. Certainly, some of the boats on their books were tired and poorly maintained, others were not. Surely it isn't their responsibility to look after the boat, it's the owner's? I found them pleasant and helpful.

If I were selling I would certainly consider them.

thanks Avalon, nice to hear. Certainly as I mentioned its nice to deal with someone who is proactive, I have a little experience in employing and running a sales team and in the end making the choice who I wanted to sell my boat was easy due to how I was handled by all the brokerages I contacted.
