The rotating vane of my Windex 15 has been broken, probably by a bird strike. I can buy a replacement but I can't remember how the vane is fitted and retained on the vertical post. I seem to remember that a brass hexagon is involved. So that I can ascend the mast properly equipped can anyone remind me how it's done and what tools are required please. I see that they make a bird strike preventer I guess these can be retro-fitted?

The 2 parts of the vertical member screw together. This joint traps the static arms. Pliers might be best for a weatherd screw joint

I think this may apply to another make of wind indicator. I'm pretty sure that in the Windex make the vertical member is in one piece. (I stand to be corrected)

Make sure you're sitting down before you see the cost of the new vane.

One of the arms was broken off mine. I repaired it with epoxy putty and its been fine for a few years now.
Ha! Despite me turning the antenna and hawk around so that it was sheltered/hidden under the mast lying across some pallets at just below waist height, darling daughter walked into the thing and snapped off one of the indicator arms. Extensive searching says you can't buy just the arms so it's the whole wind indicator as spares and the cheapest I've found it is £19.95 +£3.95 postage.

I was impressed with your work on Instagram taking the mast down.

I see you've just edited to admit being an Instagram stalker... I think Abs put the video plus some photos and explanations up. She was checking the order that we're been doing things with me as we were driving back in the Landy yesterday. Social media - you've got to love it...
Today I drilled some holes in the hull ready to fit some seacocks for a toilet. Obviously I had to work this morning to. it was coffee and cake and off down the boatyard at 1200.

I've enjoyed seeing your handiwork over the summer on Instagram.

Thank you. I expect she'll put some more pictures up soon. I've arranged for Pete Sanders to cut a new suit of sails for her to go with the roller reefing gear we've just bought her (and the toilet), but I've told her after this she's on her own. The sails she inherited with the boat are really really bad... She's going to buy a tiller pilot and if she gets a little solar panel to keep her battery topped up, then she's got a little (almost go anywhere) cruiser. At least she pays her own mooring fees and insurance... She also paid for the boat originally so It's not all bank of mum and dad.

She's agreed to help us crew Serendipity across the the Carib but I'm not sure who's the beneficiary in that deal.

Apologies for the thread drift to the OP.

Me too. I had just replaced the one before that was broken when the mast was down and boat ashore by someone who clearly was in aware ho ho, when I broke the new one putting the mast up.
