I've just arranged to go through all the broads bridges, departing at 1430.

I'm quite looking forward to it, and the chance to wash kudu properly in fresh(ish) water. Two or three days of relaxing and certainly not fishing since it's out of season by a week :|

The Norfolk Broads are lovely at any time of year, but that is going to add another six months to your final arrival time now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How far are you intending to travel? Lots of vacant 24 hour moorings from Breydon Water up through Reedham (swing bridge does seem to open as needed from quarter past the hour to quarter to the hour) and on up the river.

In fresh water does your draft increase or decrease? Suppose most of the Broads is still pretty salty as tidal!

Some excellent pubs you can 'park' right outside too. Once in you will take ages to get out again!! Other places (Langley Staithe is nice with free moorings but no pub) where you are in the middle of nowhere and can watch Kingfishers whiz past.

I am sailing dinghies (well I'll probably be driving the safety boat!) with the Sea Scouts on Saturday on the River Yare starting from Coldham Hall SC down river to the Beauchamp Arms (Lunch time stop for the Scout Leaders!) and then back again.

Broads Tides can be got here

Enjoy!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Draft will increase. I used to remove 2kg lead from my weight belt when I dived in fresh water to have the same buoyancy as salt.

I didn't know this! You learn something everyday. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm here now, at Wherry. The harbour master and crew are ace! £9 for a sailing boat for a week, but since I have an engine (:( ) it's £31. I'm only here for a few days though. However, if you're only doing a single passage somewhere rather than cruising, then it's £9.50 again, so that is what I am doing. Setting off tomorrow morning.

I also met another forumite on the way out or the RNSYC. Tony mudplugger, I believe he said. It's takes my by surprise a bit for a stranger, in a strange county I've never been to in my life before shout out "Good luck Nathan!" haha. After I've checked for handcuffs on their person I relax and talk to them.

I also met Wherry the other day. Cracking chap. I should be getting photo's! Bugger. Right, I'm coming back down to start again. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

from the Broads Authority Web page on bridge heights

Haddiscoe New Cut 7.32m or 24' Fixed road
Postwick Viaduct 10.7m 35' Fixed road

If you want to get to Reedham and in to Norwich.

The Railway swing bridges (Somerleyton and Reedham)display boards telling you the waiting time except Trowse which is on fixed opening times.

I will be out and about on the Broads with the Broads Authority on Wednesday so will keep a lookout for you. Don't use all that petrol get yer sails up /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

(I reckon a heavy weight on the swung out boom will get you under Hadiscoe Bridge at low tide!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Likely to be mudplugger as he is on way North in Highland Lass. His approach to ballast was to take a tonne or more out to avoid divers bills when redoing the boot topping.

That was it!

`I just went for a sail about Oulton broad. This place is fantastic. I nice change in scenery from the sea. Sailed back up to the pontoon almost perfectly too... had to give her a little bit of a pull on the shrouds to stop her, but otherwise, a job well done. It had to be really, there's too many motor boaters around to cock up with sailing /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I expect that you could take your mast down and get to Preston without going out to sea again. Now there's a thought /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

How's this for an idea Nathan...spend more time on the East Coast, then when you want to get back to Liverpool, nip round to the Wash, get yourself to Boston and the entrance to the River Witham, drop the stick, start the engine and going through the River Witham Navigation into the Fossdyke canal, then head North to the River Trent. Pck up the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal, turn west on the Aire & Calder Mainline Canal then the Calder & Hebble Navigation Canal which leads into the Rochdal canal. Then pick up the Stretford & Leigh Branch of the Bridgwater Canal which in turn will lead into the Leads and Liverpool Canal and you are in Liverpool inside 8 days! Easy!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We've got the Ribble link now, so using the same route I could get myself to Preston marina.

Maybe that's 2011's project. Through Britain on a 21footer. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

2' 2" draft though. I think I might touch the bottom on some stretches... also, Kudu isn't very trolley proof.

Nathan

Some friends of mine are up there at the moment on their honeymoon aboard their Oday 22 called Caterina. If you bump into them say hello from me but dont go drinking with them...unless you can drink your own body weight in black sambuca... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

D'oh!

All this time I've had Peter in my head. My Apologies.

This happens with everybody I meet, as soon as they introduce themselves my brain seems to switch off uncontrollably when they say their name. Seriously, I can be speaking to somebody who told me their name 30 seconds ago and be racking my brains trying to remember what they said.

I once got chatting to a girl in a bar, I then dragged her around london and spent the whole evening with her. She offered me her mobile number and I went to put it in my phone, but ended up writing "girl x" because I couldn't remember what it was. She then asked "what did you put me in as? Because you haven't asked my name yet." haha. I'm a face man.

Right, the log is now called Patrick.

Next I'll be getting the names of Mark CPD, and Bob full circle wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I hadn't considered it either, though of course it makes sense once you think about it. Is there a formula for calculating how much draft will increase?
