Do any forumites keep their boats in Brixham Marina? It's somewhere we quite fancy taking "Prophecy" for a couple of seasons 2005/6. What are it's plus and minus points, and are you happy there? Also, any comments about Brixham YC - are new members welcome, is it a lively, social club etc etc??

We have visited there a couple of times whilst on West Country cruises, and loved it, but how do you find it on a permanant basis? Your thoughts would be welcome pls.

Many thanks

I can't tell you about the Marina, I've only visited it a couple of times. (Can't stand Marinas!). We usually stay overnight on the club pontoon.

I can tell you that the club is welcoming and always seems to be lively.

Can't help much with the marina - like you I have visited it a couple of times, that's all. It seems like a nice place and well sheltered unless the wind's in the nor-east when it can get very lumpy n the harbour.

The Brixham Yacht Club is small, informal and lively. The entire Royal Torbay YC IRC fleet decamped there a few years ago after a falling out. I am sure they would be delighed to welcome new, active members.

I spent 2 years at Brixham Marina. The staff were helpful and the facilities were OK.
There were no lift out facilities at Brixham.
As it is owned by MDL it is not cheap, particularly when you add in additional costs such as a season ticket for the car park. Depending on the time you are likely to travel, driving there can be tortuous as the final part of the journey is on single carriageway roads which can fill up with caravans.
I moved to Plymouth (Mayflower) which is less expensive than Brixham, has all facilities on site, offers fantastic views from the pontoons. An additional benefit for me (based in Nottingham) is that it is as quick to get to Plymouth as Brixham because of better road links. The A38 dual carriageway is only about 1.5 miles from the marina. I found the last 10 miles driving to Brixham could be a real pain in season because of the narrow roads and caravans!

I also find the choice of sailing destination much better from Plmouth because you can go west to Fowey and Falmouth or east to Salcombe. If the weather really kicks up, you can just potter up the river or get the Ferry to Edgecombe Park and have a beer at the Cremyll Arms.

Hi,

I sail out of the Exe and am a regular visitor to Brixham. As the previous replies have mentioned, the marina is very expensive and is becoming more a place for motor boats which stay in harbour and the owners enjoying marina life. Since they installed the events pontoon it has been very difficult for visitors to obtain overnight berthing in the marina. The cost of mooring(rafting without any water or electricity) on the events pontoon is the same for an overnight berth in the marina.
The guys who work in the marina Simon & Simon are great and work hard to assist but MDL rules limit what can be offered.
Brixham Yacht club has accommodated many club weekends for various clubs and is very well run. The stewardship changed about 3-4 years ago and the lady who looks after the commercial aspects ie bar food etc is excellent. It is really a racing club and most members are racers but each weekend visiting cruisers are there in numbers also.
One post referred to geographical position and I would agree that it is aweful get to. Like him. I have found a location that has direct links. However, if you have time then it's not a problem.

Regards.

Peter.

Hi Nicho

I have a berth in Brixham Marina. This is my second year after moving from the Solent after 7 years.

The marina is as well run as any with very friendly and helpful staff. I also noticed a much friendlier berth holder attitude. The marina is easy to get in and out of at all states of the tide. The Bay is totally uncluttered.

Bx YC is also friendly and as pointed out by another forumite, under new-ish club management which is excellent.

Always a down side. Commuting can be difficult - my end of the 303 and from Newton Abbott onward to Bx are a pain, same going home. But its worth it.

If you want more detail PM me.

Regards

Dave D
