Brixham - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Three in Brixham.

The good - The Upper Deck, 1 The Strand - Just a single doorway at street level, with the restaurant over a chippy, and hard as hell to spot, but probably the best fillet steak I've eaten in a while. Just don't expect salad.

The bad - Saxtys, 1 The Quay - the sign says "you only get what you pay for". Ha! I wish - SWMBO had mussels as a starter tha worked out at 90p each! The food was average at best, and at least 50% overpriced. Avoid.

The ugly - Damar Bistro, Kings Quay - Owner/manager apparently drunk by 7pm, told me I was ordering too much food, as we ordered starters and mains. Insisted on payment upfront and wouldn't hold a credit card to keep a tab going. Wine never arrived, so we complained, was told we hadn't ordered it, so they insisted on going through the credit card receipt only to find that we had already paid for it. Starters and main courses all arrived together, so the mains had to be sent back. Quite astonishing...

I must admit, all the time I was in the area, I nevver found anywhere decent to eat in Brixham, I dont know anybody who has, until now.

Would have agreed until last year when we had a good, reasonably priced meal in the Yacht Club. Good view over the outer harbour as well. Talking of views there's also the hotel a 15 minutes walk from the marina out towards Berry Head. I think we only had bar meals but as far as I can remember they were OK. At least it's far enough out of Brixham to keep the rabble away.

I agree, there are quite a few decent places OUT of brixham, never tried the yacht club, I tend not to.

Have always found the yacht club very good until a few months ago when we all had a very mediocre meal, hopefully it was just an off day.

The Berry Head hotel is good, well worth the walk.
