Brittany virgin cruise

Are you setting out from Poole?

We love the area around Roscoff and if you can do make the trip up to Morliax.

Yes, August/September time to coincide with the forum Scuttlebutt. We may have up to 4 weeks so looking for ideas. I've got Tom Cunliffes Channel Pilot on the boat, but if I remember this only gives pilot guides into specific ports, what I'd be interseted to know is if there are tried and tested routes as we have never been before so it will all be new to us anyway.

I'm just after extra reading material really, I already have TCs book and enjoy reading it. Being a 23 footer, a lot depends on the weather, family issues and funding as to wether we'll make the trip or not.

It's very important to use the tide to your advantage along the Brittany coast. There are plenty of interesting ports and anchorages not too far apart so you can get in somewhere when the tide is about to turn against you.

Exploring the rivers is good fun and there are some delightful places up river, eg Treguier, Lezardrieux, Morlaix, Pontrieux, Port Launay etc.

Waypoints from Pilot Books, care.

Thank You Tom. Good reviews too.
I see it has waypoints, would these cover passages from port to port?[/QUOTE
HI COLHEL,
Taking waypoints from pilot books is ok if you plot them on a chart and then figure out that the route is safe, by inspection, all other considerations taken into account.
If like I did once, you enter the waypoints correctly into a GPS, have them checked, and then find yourself in shallower water than expected, it is because there was an erratum in the printing of the pilot book. The slip of paper admitting this, may be included at the back of the publication!
So lesson learned:
1.Plot the intended trip on paper or electronic plotter, check as above.
2. Examine your purchase if new for errata. If secondhand, assume that the erratum slip is missing and take extra care in using any other waypoint other than those decided upon by oneself.
This aspect is mentioned only as it is a trap for the unwary, newer equipment allowing one to point and click in waypoints more visually without the same degree of risk as the waypoint might after insertion, be then compared with the pilot book co-ordinate to check?

If you haven't done it then
Cher, St PP, St Malo, Paimpol, St PP, Cher
is a good round trip of about 220 Nm not including X channel.
Your main tide gate is Cher - St PP, so you need to arrange the trip to do that bit about half way between neaps and springs when the current starts to run west around mid morning and the converse on the return, leaving St PP approaching neaps to get the north going current in the morning, that should get you back to Cher for the neap w/e scuttlebutt get together ;)

north brit you need to go furthest west first. it gives you a better tidal window. especially when entering ports that are only open at say +/- 2 hrs HW

With 4 weeks to play with, aim for St Malo via CIs,and either head West in easy stages, as far as you like but try at least for Morlaix and then come back via Guernsey or go up river Rance if the weather is against you.

The main consideration is to hit each port in time for a Fest Noz. If you like Irish music you will probably like the Breton stuff. They even do 'Dirty Old Town' (Vieille Ville de Merde) though heaven knows how that comes under the heading of Irish.
