Bristol to Essex

Hi all this is my first post so I will probably do it all wrong but still here we go
Have just bought a cataraman in Bristol and have to sail back to Essex in April any advice ? Or do,s and don,its will be much appreciated, many thanks

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

You give no indication of the boat or your experience. Personally, I would not be sailing a new to me boat round Lands End at any time of year. Once you arrive at the north Cornish coast there are few bolt holes and you are on a lee shore in a westerly for 100 miles. April can be a bit fickle with the weather.

Either way, please do keep us updated on your adventures as you embark! I'd certainly love to hear about it (I dream of one day getting a bigger boat than our current to Lundy, then Scilly).

Hi Sandy I've been living aboard my 52 foot Mfv for the last 20 years and have clocked up over 9000 nm on the east coast, its amazing how many miles one can go going nowhere, however I have never been over the west coast before nor have I sailed. So using some friends who have circumnavigated before so I will have help thank you

That's the bit that annoys me when I try to do some clips... when it's hectic... that's the interesting bit... and also the bit you can't film!

We did Medway to Watchet one summer week. Flat calm all the way. We just kept turning right. If you do the opposite you'll get there OK!

We have done it several times in both directions. First time in March - because I didn't know any better.

Wait until May or June and get a good weather tide situation for Portishead to Newlyn. Longer days and warmer, well less cold weather. The absence of plan B destinations can focus the mind.
Time going around the end for daylight.
Someone will be along with the point of the tide that you need to be at the Brissons.

After that things get easier. A relative term.
Tactics depend on your skill- enthusiasm versus the weather.

We have been "around the corner" to Torquay
Stopped at Padstow, Plymouth and then Torquay
Lands End was a bit bumpy even on, what seemed to be, a perfect day!

Found my little set of crib cards. A set of index cards with a treasury tag or similar. Have my panic instructions and popular routes with the 'sums'

Following supplied for guidance only and with no warranty ,blah, blah, blah

Think I got it from Reeds or the Blue Book - all at the boat, except my little set of crib cards.

For Milford to Newlyn, amounts to the same - the Brissons is the key point - be at Brissons at HWD +2 to -3 Take the inside route.
Aim to miss Kettle's Bottom and The Armed Knight, and for safety go outside Runnel Stone - encouraging names. But you hopefully know that.

For us @5 kn - then the Brissons to Newlyn is 5 hours - it says here. But with the tide even we go faster than that.

Watch the nav as you pass Mousehole and approach Newlyn. I favour passing Low Lee on easterly side - unless you are a local - also look out for fishing gear across the entrance to Newlyn!!!!
