Mrs jhr has, ahem, "hinted" that she'd like a weekend in Brighton. Retail therapy is almost certainly going to be a feature of the excursion :-(

Can any of the local forumites suggest a reasonably cool Hotel to stay at (i.e. Norman & Zoe rather than Darby & Joan), preferably near to places like The Lanes and within striking distance of the seafront?

Price less important than quality (he said, between gritted teeth).

The three best hotels used to be The Grand, The Hilton Metropole and the Thistle - but a new one has just opened (bit pricey but worth it) - it's called Du VIn. It's had rave reviews. I booked some US Execs in there last week and they said it's first class There's also a new one right in the marina called Seattle, but it's difficult to get in at weekends. They are taking advance bookings.

Last time me and Tutts stopped in Brighton we try'd every hotel, all said they were full. Mind you we were after a double room and we were only about 18 at the time. Finally I lost my nerve and ariving at this really scrufy doss house. (all that was left) I meekly asked for two singles. THe woman grabbed hold of the two of us and said. You will be OK with a double wont you!! Got up for breakfast next morning and wondered where the dinning room was. Opened the bedroom door and stud in the breakfast, which way laying on the floor!! Not been back since.

Hotel Du Vin excellent but indeed pricey. Also try Pellirocco in Regnecy Square (ubercool), C in Atlingworth Street (also vv cool and another excellent restaurant, tho wine's not so good as Hotel Du Vin) or Paskins in Charlotte Street - slightly cheaper, lovely people and superb (vegetarian) food. Grand of course its own expedrience but not really Zoe & Norm, and Metropole certainly isn't. Tea at the Grand is a laugh, tho sobered by view of collapsing Pier.

Enjoy your weekend - I live here and it's a good place to be.

You're right Hotel Pelirocco is great fun - each room is themed. If you're feeling very adventurous, you can also hire a dungeon in Brighton for the night.

Thanks Pauline & Abigail; I am now spoiled for choice. There's an Hotel du Vin down the road from me in Winchester and it, too, is seriously nice. However I'm very tempted by Pellirocco or Paskins (Mrs jhr, though not a veggie, likes vegetarian cooking) so will mull it over.

I also have a few other minor details to fix, like renegotiation of the mortgage (for the shopping bill) and "persuading" friends to take the kids for a weekend, before pressing the go button.

Interested to read about the dungeon, but let's not even go there. I will save Haydn's recommendation for when I really want to show a girl a good time ;o)
