When did the tsunami arrive?

A couple of weeks ago I believe. Some project-planning expert at Premier Marinas has apparently decided to close the lock (and therefore the boatyard) for six weeks from the beginning of September. So if you need an emergency lift at Brighton .... you need to go to Eastbourne!

Quite why they had to do this in September while there is still a bit of life left in the season, and not in (say) October or November is a bit of a mystery...

Cheers

From Premier Marina's website;

Marina: Brighton

In September 2011, the lock at Brighton Marina will close for five weeks for essential maintenance.

The work to be undertaken includes draining the lock by installing stop logs to allow for shot blasting and re-painting of the south lock gates; replacing hinge and bracket assemblies and replacing all seals.

During this time, it will not be possible for vessels to transit the lock into the inner harbour/ boatyard, however, alternative berthing arrangements will be made for the duration of the shutdown.

Following a lengthy tender process, the refurbishment contract for the first phase of the major lock works has been awarded to BAM Nuttalls. The budget for the first phase is £360,000 and the second and third year's works will see the middle and north gates receiving similar attention.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause but it is essential that we undertake this project so that the lock continues to operate effectively. The project is part of our ongoing commitment as we continually work towards improving operations to ensure a first-class service for our Berth Holders.

The first phase of the project will be carried out with minimal disruption and we will keep you updated on our progress throughout.

For further information please call into the Marina Reception, telephone 01273 819919 or email brighton@premiermarinas.com.

As I work for Premier Marinas I wanted to take this opportunity to comment and reassure customers about our activity with regard to Brighton Marinas' lock. The lock is not actually owned by Premier Marinas although we are obliged to manage the maintenance program. There is never a good time to close the lock but we chose the quieter time for the boatyard to minimise the inconvenience to customers. This is the first time that the lock at Brighton has been completely shut down for scheduled maintenance in 20 years. The current program is expected to be completed by mid October when the lock will become fully operational once again. During this period we have taken the opportunity to completly refurbish Brighton Marinas' 60 ton boat hoist in preparation for a busy boatyard season. Meanwhile our boatyards at Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne and Chichester are standing by to help customers withg any enquiries they may have. If you would like to follow the activity visit our website www.premiermarinas.com where you can find information about the lock closure.
