Brighton Marina is completely bloody useless!!

Met with Dan, who is one of the assistant managers, at the marina today and when I gave him the chronology of events I think even he was a little surprised at what a mess it's been for something that shouldn't have happened in the first place and then didn't get resolved effectively.. Good thing was he didn't attempt to cover it up at all and apologised for them dropping the ball with regards to not responding to the query..

He said they have issues with the electricity supply on the pontoon we are on because there are lots of smaller boats and when the marina was built the smaller boats didn't need electricity but now just about every boat does..

He has proposed a couple of acceptable solutions and will let me know the options in the next couple of days and hopefully it will all be resolved by the weekend and won't repeat again..

After reading this thread, that is one marina I think I will avoid.

I firmly believe you can't please everyone all the time and by the number of boats there people are obviously generally happy but to screw up on such simple things really isn't good and you are always remembered for what you get wrong..

Like I said to him today I really don't know why they don't simply have an electronic issue tracking system to keep on top of queries.. Then things would be far less likely to be "lost" and everyone one will have a far better experience..

We go every year for a couple of nights for the girls to go shopping etc. and we have always been treated very well by Brighton Marina and never had a problem with getting power. Hopefully this was just a glitch and you will not have any further problems. -Andrew

Every marina has an advantage and a disadvantage, as a Brighton regular or used to be I'm in a position to comment on the place, in fact I did an article for MBM but it never got published (yet). There are not many marinas that have what Brighton offers, 24 hr access, bars casinos, clubs within walking distance, cheap moorings, yes the disadvantages, the stale water, car parking, a long way from anywhere, but overall it is a good place to go, with good staff. In the summer the visitors area is busy and a good way to meet other boaters.

I would recommend the marina just because there was a issue doesn't make it a bad marina.

On a rather grotty evening this March we were getting a hammering on route from Pompy to Dover.
I phoned Brighton from the boat to ask,
a, Is there space on the visitors moorings for tonight?
Yes
b, I draw 6'4" will there be enough water to get in, I'm about 5nm SW so should get there in just less than an hour.
"yes it should be fine"
c, We have 30knots here from the SSE, will the entrance be ok, I've never been to Brighton before.
"yes, yes, just approach from the SE heading NW and you'll pick up the lights, there will be no problem.

Well it was the most scary entrance I've ever had that night and I've had a few over the years.
Found it hard to pick up the lights with Brighton in the background.
The large swell was bouncing back off the huge walls making steering a real challenge.
The depth was ok but only just by the skin of my teeth, the depth alarm was on full time from about 100 yards out.
to cap it all we rolled around all night on the outer visitors berth and no-one came down so we had no idea of what the loo code was and had to ask a local.
I will never forgive them for not being frank and honest about how bad the entrance is in a 30knt SSE in the dark.

If I'd have known I'd have sailed on and I will do in future.

Also we found the official literature interesting, and from memory it said something like.
"Brighton is the Gay capital of the UK but Don't worry you won't see anything of that!"
I'm not gay but if I was I'm not sure I'd appreciate that comment.
