About to change the engine oil on a Yanmar 3YM20. The type of oil is a 15W40 grade mineral type. Unfortunately branded mineral oil such as Castrol, Mobile etc is a bit of a rarity as the outlets I have tried sell only semi or fully synthetic types or in the case of Halfords their own brand mineral oil. Hmmmm. However the local car accessory shop is selling a brand known as Comma mineral oil I have never heard of this brand. Has anyone used this and could recommend this maker of oil Comma.

Comma is respectable and well known in my nearest factor. I don't know their pedigree but I assumed it was no different than branded, just cheaper.

They were an Esso / Exon brand but were sold to a Brazilian company a few years back, but have no reason to belive there has been any change in their high quality.

If you know what 'quality' of oil your engine requires, then that is all you need. The meaning of the various letters are detailed (IIRC) of Vyv Cox's help pages. There are loads of UK based blenders that seel mineral oils. - Millar oils for one, etc.

Don't use the very cheap Comma stuff unless it has the line of incomprehensible numbers and letters on the label, Comma knock out some 20/50 stuff which has not been submitted for classification, so the 15/40 may well be the same

Now this stuff is probably fine for putting into an old banger but few people will want to chance it with a boat engine. I often use it (20/50) as a flushing oil in motorbikes.

I have found Halfords mineral stuff to be generaly fine, it normally has the incomprehensible letters and numbers. The 20/50 looks reassuringly like the old green Duckhams.

Comma stuff is perfectly fine as is any oil that has the correct API specification that you need. Your engine probably only specifies CD anyway and even my non branded 15w/40 is CF if I remember. Newer synthetic stuff is up to CH now or more.

The numbers aren't incomprehensible by the way, if you have a quick google there are some very easy explanations as to what they mean.

I had a look at Vyv’s web site earlier a bit of information overload. However good stuff on it and a guide to the numbers and letters to look out for which are on the back of the Comma bottle so it is probably good stuff. The engine does spec CD grade oil but I believe this is now obsolete. Comma it is getting and hopefully gives me no hassles.

go to na super mkt or motor factors, read the spec label, look for CF-4 15 / 40 @ around £15 for 5lts

I had noticed this oil recently
https://www.wilcodirect.co.uk/product/15w-40-oils/comma-x-flow-type-mf-15w40-oil-25l
It was signed off by Volvopaul as being suitable for a kad32 volvo penta engine so expect it should be acceptable for any engine needing a 15w40 mineral oil.
I think you should be able to find a 10% discount code which probably only works if you select free delivery rather than pick up in store - try code WDFLYER or WDSOC1A

Job done engine now running on Comma mineral oil.

While looking for oil car accessory shop was selling this 1Ltr of Castrol 0W40 grade synthetic for £21.95 seems to be the going rate for this oil. You can buy a very good bottle of scotch cheaper than this.
