The old meaning of a shambles is a slaughterhouse, which probably tells us all we need to know about what the old sailors thought about it.

I spent a forenoon watch looking for the body of a sailor who was part of a crew who tried to sail over the Shingles. Never found that day, washed up on a beach a day later. Reminder that our adventures are not without risk.
