Brakes on a road trailer

Thanks Avocet and Lakesailor....very comprehensive.

just spoken to the guy at Hornby's who was very helpful. needs to see the trailer etc obviously but based on a complete new axle and hitch £800-£1000. whilst a lot it would seem to cover everything Avocet post assuming the guy knows what his business. Guess its possible i could get a second hand trailer for something similar but finding it and travelling to and fro seems like hard work

Yes, he is fully up-to-date on the Oct 2012 regs. It's got to be worth going to see him.
My experience of secondhand trailers is that there will be a fair bit of work to do anyway. If your trailer chassis is good and obviously it fits the boat, a conversion sounds the best route to go, especially as you don't want to do the work yourself. Getting a mechanic to refurb a shabby trailer is looking like money wasted.

If he can provide a single axle conversion that is legal it would be fine. The whole outfit would be about 1500kg, the same as many caravans are rated for.

There are other trailer makers, one outside Kendal, but many specialise in off-road farm trailers (unsurprisingly) and may not be as good on the legalities.

Thanks guys....Mark from Hornby's going to travel up to Ullswater and measure up and hopefully all being well I'll get it done before the autumn so I can pull it all the way back to Wilts for the winter for a winter refurb.....needs quite a bit doing!

Really useful...cheers and happy sailing to all!

Just to say Mark from Hornby's came up to Ullswater on Saturday....no problem with conversion...new axle/hubs plus new hitch all cabled up and legal £500 max. So happy with that...cheaper and easier than looking for a second hand one
Thanks for the contact Lakesailor plus comments from everyone

Just a note to anyone considering converting US trailers. Wider trailers are allowed in the US than in Europe, some new boats are supplied with trailers which are not road legal here. Before venturing into a conversion, make sure the finished item is not too wide!

Rob.
