Why do they sound so awful ? Like something grinding against metal ..... how do they work ?

I've no idea how they work, but I reckon they are designed to make a horrible noise for 2 reasons:

1. To stop you using them too much.

2. So people in marinas who haven't got bowthrusters can look smug when they see people who have got them and use them too much! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

That gerinding sound is the cavitation caused by a tiny propellor turning at high revs. The sound is amplified through the bow thruster tubing and then through the hull. There is a lot of power being pushed through the propellor, so you also have quite a lot of water noise as well. By halfway through the season (especially if you didnt antifoul very well), and if you havent used it for a while, some of the initial grinding, is the sound of little barnacles being whizzed into soup /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Your normal thruster goes forwards and backwards, well your bowthruster pops a bit of side to side in at the same time. In my experiance allways raises the noise level a little.!!!!!!
