Re: hey presto - kaboom!

240v bars have worked fine on our friends boat, he has admittedly coupled them with a dehumidifier (240v too). Can't see a problem there as one cannot be used without the other as both can only be used when we are on shore power.

Boat names (OUR FAVE SUBJECT AT THE MO!)

1. Careless Whisper (My favourite!)

2. Life O'Brien (Geddit???) Our surname is.......

3. Phil's fault (after who got us started in all this!)

Votes will be counted and a decision will be made......prizes may be given to people who vote in my favour ;-)

Depends on what kind of autopilot you want, inboard or wheel mounted. The wheel mounted ones are easy enought to retrofit but you may wish to opt for the inboard one which I would imagine are a different proposition. Definitely go for the deep lead keel option, it will make a serious difference to the sailing performance. Are matching veneer cabinets on the Bavs an optional extra yet?

Re: hey presto - kaboom!

none are as good as Angela 101, imho. Calling it "Careless Whisper" invokes dubious sexual conotations. Inclusion of the word "Careless" or "Lunatic" or "Mad" or "Hopeless" or "Silly" etc etc in the name ain't a great idea if there's ever an accident. All imho. Guess i won't be geting a prize...

Re: hey presto - kaboom!

My particular favourite would be

A BALEEN GROIN

which of course is an anagram of your name, and it would be fun explaining to curious onlookers that the boat's named after you!

Bavaria don\'t factory fit extras....

...the boat comes as a kit almost and Opal Marine (Ancaster for beneteaus possibly do the same) fit all the goodies.

We "camped2 on a busy marina hard whilst Bavaria's local man fitted out ours and several other Bavarias. Apart from the engine controls he had to fit all the electronics from a box supplied by the factory.

Jesus Man! What are you suggesting?

you may not know that a Baleen is a whale. So you are expecting this charming lady to admit that the boat is called the "Private Parts Region of a Large Grey Marine Mammal" and admit to it being named after her?

Perhaps more water with it next time or a less stressful existance?

as previous posting go for lead keel if an option and check the boom hight as bav 34 with std main comes at about 5ft 8" ideal for head banging.

Bowthrusters are great bits of kit.

Do you need one for your Bav? I doubt it.

I've sailed boats that needed them, a Sadler Barracuda spings to mind. It had twin rudders so the prop put no flow over them and the thruster was worth it's weight in gold. I've sailed boats with them that didn't need them, a rather nice Dehler DS41, but it had loads of kit and the thrusters didn't get used while I was aboard.

I've sailed a lot of Bav's and they have no vices that require bowthrusters to remedy. They've got vices but they're pretty impecable in the marina.

From that selection I'd support Option 1. Pun names like Life O'Brien become very wearing quite quickly, especially as you'd have to spell it out repeatedly when/if you called up the Coastguard or a marina on VHF. Similarly you'd feel a right wally shouting "Phil's Fault" across a crowded marina.

What name did you give the GP14? As I recall "Lady in Red" was He Who Cannot Be Named's least favourite song.

He Who Cannot Be Named needs no encouragement as far as buying toys is concerned.

Thank-you Peppermint, we have decided to not have bowthrusters fitted. In fact you'd be surprised how little extras we've decided to have fitted at all!

Re: hey presto - kaboom!

Hello Jeremy, Steve never renamed the GP14. In fact it is now up for sale as the sailing club now only have the right to sail on Sunday which limits our use somewhat.

As for the name for the Bav please see my other post and see what you think!

Steve tells me you've just sailed a boat to Holland for another forum's member, did you do it single handed?? How long did it take??

Re: Bavaria don\'t factory fit extras....

You are right - most of the "extras" are fitted at Sparkes, though they do a good job. We have a Bavaria 36, and after 6 months of ownership, have to say we don't really seem to need a bow thruster. Nevertheless we are having one fitted, which may sound daft following the previous sentence, but there are times when it can be oh so helpful, especially when trying to get the bow through the wind, or close quarter manoeuvering with a serious tide running through the pontoons.

One other point, on a 38, you might be better off with the inboard ST5000, which is considerably more powerful and smoother operating than the wheel mounted versions. Also in the (unlikely) event of steering failure, there's a good chance of steering the boat with the autopilot, as it acts straight onto the rudder mechanism itself rather than the wheel.

Re: Bavaria don\'t factory fit extras....

Nicho, nice to hear from you again. Steve has helped fit an ST4000+ on a Bav 32 which is wheel mounted, he's planning to fit the ST5000+ to our boat, is that wheel mounted or does it ONLY connect directly to the rudder steering mechanism? If so does it make it harder to fit? Access is pretty good.

Is your wife looking forward to the new season tomorrow? ;-)

I did two double-handed England - Holland trips: One in a Contessa 26 and one in a Vertue. Both lasted between 30 and 36 hours, with fair winds.

The only trip I've done all year that started and finished in the same place was the Round The Island Race!
