I am moored on a freshwater river (Severn). The Vetus bowthruster does not have a freshwater anode option. Apparently it is possible to fit a bodge set-up. Vetus's view is that the brine anode is ok.

Any views out there?

Basically zinc is suitable for salt water, but becomes coated with an oxide layer which renders it ineffective in brackish and freshwater.

Aluminium is suitable for salt water and brackish water but like zinc not for freshwater.

Magnesium is the material to use in freshwater but it is too reactive to use in brackish and salt water.

The zinc or aluminium fitted for salt or brackish water do not lose the coating acquired in fresh water when returned to salt water so then remain ineffective when most needed.

More detailed info on MG DUFF'S website

If you are permanently in fresh water maybe you will find a magnesium anode to fit from a specialist anode supplier. Maybe Vetus feel an anode is not necessary in fresh water.
