Can anybody advise me please which fitting is commonly used for the lower anchor point for the bowsprit stay on the stem of a plastic boat.

Is it something that has to be manufactured to suit, or are there a range of fittings off the shelf available somewhere?

Made a wedge of thickened epoxy on the inside to get a good surface for the baking plate.

Had to extend the threads got help from a welder to add a piece from a threaded rod.

As already said, no one way. Depends on how much load on the bowsprit and what you are attaching it to. Eye bolt, U Bolt or custom made fitting can all be - and have been - used.

Kindred Spirit has a (presumably) custom fitting consisting of a strap running up the stem (with several bolts or screws through it) and a U-bolt incorporated into the end.

If you want a special fitting, Classic Marine sell them. The stay you're talking about is called the bobstay, and these are their bobstay fittings: http://classicmarine.co.uk/boatstore/product.asp?strParents=0,35&CAT_ID=60&P_ID=482

They also have bowsprit shroud plates which look to me like they would work for a bobstay, subject to size / strength: http://classicmarine.co.uk/boatstore/product.asp?strParents=0,35&CAT_ID=60&P_ID=181

Many thanks for all of your help. Really appreciate the input and leads.

The fixing you are looking for is known as the Cutwater fixing and as Tranona states, it is very important to understand the loads imposed upon and carried through this fixing.

If you Google "Cutwater Bobstay", you might obtain further information? ;)

Thanks. I like the nose piercing idea but not sure it would suit the old biddy.

There are some good ideas on the google search, (now I know the search words). I like the idea of this one,

http://www.hanschristian.org/bb/download.php?id=749 .

Will have to have a good look at her tomorrow when she comes out of the water and see what is possible.

Thanks again.
