As part of my trying to come up with a shortlist of suitable boats it was suggested that I consider a Bowman 40. One of the attractions is the cutter rig but I was concerned about the complexity of running backstays when short handed. I was watching the YM video of 'Bagheera of Whitby' and she seems to have replaced these with a 'triatic diamond' spreader. Googling this hasn't helped! Is this a recognised method of replacing running backstays and is it a possible retrofit or does it require mast replacement?

We only use our runners when on the staysail as you would expect but at that point we have normally got a reef or two in the main so the runners clear the mainsail. You could have both runners on and not need to touch them with this set up.
They are only extra work otherwise when short tacking
