In short Pauline "YES!" unless they have been specifically denied in the competition instructions. But! remember the handing is very much in the eye of the Judges and if two boats are equally matched then the one without a thruster will score better. Before you ask, a competitor with a single screw craft is also give an allowance too.

Re: Who needs them?

My current twin screw cruiser had a bow thruster already fitted when I got her.
Having had the boat a year cruising on both the Thames and extensively on the South Coast
I would say that whilst it may not be essential it is sometimes very useful noticably during the following.
When entering locks or stern to (finger to port) at our Brighton berth. Whilst in each case experienced
crew members getting the stern rope on promptly enables one to spring the bow in using stb fwd,
when I am with the wife (or on my own) who is not so confident or quick with the stern rope, (in lock or berth) then
the thruster is very useful for returning the wind blown bow to port thus keeping it away from other
nearby craft. I am inclined to agree with DS that it is nice to have along side things such as power
steering (we all remember early front wheel drive escorts etc without same) and electric windows air con etc.
I strongly suspect that in the event the sceptics were offered the fitting of one FREE to their craft
they would not object.

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

Oh dear, this isn't the first time either, is it? Hope cscott49 isn't feeling persecuted..

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

Boo Hoo! Think I'll go back to PBO forum, don't get shouted at over there!

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

Aw. Don't go, you incompetent fool. Oops, I meant someone else...

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

ooh no ccscott is fien chap, cos if he could have a monster engine and three bowthtrusters, he would, and if there was an offshore automast raggie crusing chute option on the leopard, I'd have that too.

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

OK! I'm gone!
I'm back! the raggies don't want me either, because I have a motor sailer with two big engines and I annoy them by being too honest!

Re: two engines

ooh what's that then? I saw an oyster sixty something in antibes with twin perkins not sure of power, hardly a mototsailer really yet quite decent under power.

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

leopard is a kind of boat. If you look at er cantiereanrno.com ours is the smallest, the 23 Sport.

Re: two engines

Englander has two 135hp mermaids, 10.5 knots under both, motorsailing with one on and a decent force 5 wind 8.5 knots. Raggies dont like me coz I advocate actually motoring or motorsailing when theres no wind! Mind you I travelled 2500 miles last year, I wonder how many miles they did, including across biscay and the ballearics and back to the algarve, couldn't have done it under sail alone! probably wouldnt have got across biscay, no wind!

Re: cscott49 gets another accidental beating

Sorry, Matts, couldnt find the site, would be interested to look at her! I'm a boatie! I like boats! I even love those wonderful thames slipper launches and all that kind of thing aswell and steam launches on the Thames and the Dart, wonderful!

Re: windup merchant?

This seems your speciality, alex! "why do blue water couples seem midle aged and boring" was another. So, surely anyone who has had the same boat for 22years must be a bit , well, boring eh? Or a stick in the mud? Or uncontrollably jealous of the fact that he once had the most wonderful sailboat around, now seen as a bit of an old tub? So takes potshots at those who have bowthrusters? Even though there are others with sternthrusters, and the very largest boats which have pilots to help them find their way (incompetence again) and even tugs to help them in and out...

Re: windup merchant?

There all incontinent. Tug boats needed now! As well as thrusters front and back. Bloody super tanker thingys, Captains all pufters. Needing tugs and thrusters. Just a sail would do the job. Didn't need nothing else in the olden days!
