After an unusually clumsy attempt at mooring, I left a sample of the topsides paint on the pontoon. Since I couldn't rule out any such occurrences in the future, I invested in a bow fender. I've secured it at each end to the toe rail at either side.

But what's the strap with a hole, wrapped around the middle of it for?

i put another small normal fender upright atached to the strap with a line leading up to the bow roller so that the bow is protected for another foot or so just in case the boat rides up over the bow fender

What Little Sister says in #3 surely?

I dunno, I'm not particularly convinced. If you raise it with a singe line, will it be level? Is it not just as easy to adjust the two lines at each side? I understand this is a trivial point, just it piqued my curiosity.

By using three lines you can adjust the angle better. Lifting / pulling at three points give more control.
