We have agreed a deal on a 'new to us boat'. Deposit paid and now need to sort the logistics of getting her home, serviced and launched!

The boat is a 1980's Sunseeker Portofino 25 with a single 246hp Steyr diesel and Bravo One drive. I'll post more details and pictures when we have collected her towards the end of the month. Although she comes with a road trailer, we're also hoping to get a berth shortly that will greatly improve our use of the boat. It does however mean that I can pull her out myself for maintenance and save lift costs. She's in very good condition internally and very original, but not been used in over a year and gel very much in need of some tlc - although structurally excellent. The only unfortunate aspect is that the coloured gel has been overpainted - by hand. This is something I'll tackle next winter by tenting, sanding back and spraying with new topcoat. Engine, drive and trailer also need a service, so I'm arranging for engineer to check over before we complete and get the boat and trailer lifted onto transport for the journey home!

Many thanks to all the friends and forum members who have contributed help and advice - you know who you are... :encouragement:

We have really enjoyed the years with the Fletchers, but want to travel further and also be able to stay aboard from time to time. A cruiser-come floating caravan will suit us very well and as we need to sta close to home for animals etc, the accommodation of the 25' is ample. I'm still going to progress the Arrowbolt and once the sale of a flat completes in a few weeks, I will have a little more budget to get on with this a bit quicker! Not sure what we're doing with the ArrowSport yet - might hold onto for a while and see how things pan out as doesn't cost anything to store her at home. Might keep her for exploring further afield and still aiming to do the Menai run.

Looking forward to a busy boating summer as we did none at all last year due to various circumstances.

Pictures to follow later in April.

Cheers,

Robin

Portofino 25 has always been one of my favourites along with other xps from the era. Absolutely timeless design. You will be cruising past other stuff many years newer in a chop that's for sure.. Got to be a perfect combo with a newer engine surely. Many congrats!

Thanks, engine has just over 200 hours so once it's had a good service, should be good for many more.

Well done, that is the one at Parkstone Bay Yachts. Nice people to do business with -they sold my diesel Fletcher 19 GTS back in 2010 at the same time as i bought my Bav 29 from them. I live just up the road - happy to say hello / have a spot of lunch if you have time . PM me.

Yes indeed. It's currently at the vendor's home as it's been for sale a while. I'll be up again with engineer at sometime and again for the lift onto lorry. If I can organise things right, I'll try and work it so I have a lunch stop :encouragement:

Many congratulations Rob. Looking forward to seeing her around the bay this summer.

Hi Andy, hope to be afloat by end of May so will keep eyes open for you :encouragement:

WELL DONE right choice to go diesel

Haha! You've been reading through that hornets nest that I inadvertently poked a few weeks ago! :D

Had a look at the pictures on the brokers site. Didn't want to link without your ok.

That will come up like a new pin. No head gasket engine looks awesome :):):)

Those pictures are over a year old, but agree she should polish up well. Shame the coloured bits are hand painted, but again this can be fixed either with spray topcoat or perhaps wrapped? (I'd prefer to spray, but need to hone my skills first on the Arrowbolt project! ;)

No issue with a link - almost posted myself, but no idea how long they will leave up! http://parkstonebayyachts.com/boats-for-sale/view/Sunseeker-Portofino-25-1983-for-sale-poole-4747367

These engines seem ok, but I suspect it's part of the reason it hadn't sold for so long? They are more common than I realised and I've had some helpful feedback from Martin (Maverick of Poole) so taking the plunge! Head of engineering at work has agreed to go and check over, so that helps too! Worst case scenario, I've factored in a repower with a D4-300... Then it'll shift! (I'd have to keep for a lng time then to get money back, but the plan is to keep long term anyway.)

i would spray. The surface needs to be perfect to wrap. On such a large area wrap will show up everything especially if glossy.

You can get pretty good results with a gloss roller but with any painting, it's all in the prep. I painted a 30ft boat navy blue with international toplac. You couldn't quite see your face in it but I was happy with it. Wet sand really smoothed it out. Hell of a job though. Given the option again I would spray but that means a tent, wet the floor, slight vacuum if you can etc...

If the engine is all good, spend the new engine budget on getting a pro to spray it :)

Actually........how about a textured carbon effect wrap?

I used a matt one on my car interior and it was really good. A good sanding and stick it on. Hairdryer round a tight radius. Could look different. Cheap too!

As it's textured and Matt, it doesn't show up all the little flaws

yes and still waiting for you to come up north

Congratulations R, the Portofino 25 is indeed a lovely boat, as most s/seekers of that era.
Very sleek and elegant - Italian style, I would dare saying...!

Just one question, re...
The boat is a 1980's Sunseeker Portofino 25 with a single 246hp Steyr diesel and Bravo One drive.
...was the boat repowered, by chance? I never heard of such package before.
Anyway, The Bravo drive (which was known to struggle with higher power/torque diesel engines) is more than capable to handle that, so I'm sure you'll be fine! :encouragement:

PS: ops, sorry, I didn't check your link before posting my comment, and I see now that the engine is 2002, which answers my question.
She looks in great shape for her age btw, congratulations again!

Thanks:encouragement: You'll be pleased to know we also have a suitably Italian name in mind for her - I'll have to keep you waiting on that though until she's home...

Haha, I didn't mention it before, but I noticed the current name in the ad pics, and yours is a good idea indeed! :encouragement:
A boat whose model is named after such a romantic place deserves something better than what the previous owner came up with...
